Can you tell me how young you can neuter a boar? I've had it done to 2 adult boars in the past, but this is a baby that I want to introduce to our two rescue girls. He is 4/5 months currently. Thank you :)

Hi!

Most vets prefer to have boars neutered once the testicles have descended. You can have your boy vet checked now.

Please be aware that strongly recommended the 6 weeks post-op wait applies at all ages. The little baby in my avatar is the unplanned daughter of an over 5 weeks post-op boar (not one of mine), just to prove that point!

Thanks for the warning. When do the testicles actually drop?

Hi, if you are in the UK, I think vets usually neuter at about 16 weeks of age or 600g in weight. Our boar Theo was underweight when we brought him home at 14 weeks/490g so despite him having some impressively descended testicles we were encouraged to wait a month and feed him up a bit, so he was neutered at 18 weeks/680g (we did very well with the feeding!) and everything went well for him. Do check with your vet, as each one may have their own preferences based on their experience, but 4-5 months is probably a good age to be considering neutering.

One of my rescue boars was recently done - he was 5 months old and weight around 900g (he’s a big boar). He seems to have recovered fully - three weeks after neuter.

Boars start around 3-4 months and are usually fully finished by 6 month. You can generally neuter any time between 4-6 months, depending on physical development, weight and general health (hence the recommended vet trip). Please read the guide link. It is all explained in there! ;)
