One of my guinea pigs is deteriorating in health. I have been to vet three times and she has had treatment but it seems she may have some sort of terminal illness. She is 4 years. So as long as she is happy and eating i am just letting her enjoy life. However, the other piggie, the more dominant one has started to torment her when she tries to rest. I feel so sorry for her that I am seperating them last thing at night or she would never get rest. I put them in a large run in and out during the day. They have always got on up to now. Just want to know if you agree its best just to seperate them at night so she can have some peace. They are not cramped and have a lovely big cage in and outside. I have them inside at night and when its cold.:(

I think it's a case of your healthy piggy telling you the other one is really not well.

When my Pip was ill, Merry just ignored him. They had always been really close until Pip started going down hill. Pigs and other animals know when another is in their last phase of life and it is a survival mechanism that makes them either ignore or fight with an ill piggy. It's not good in teh wild to be loitering around with a slower, ill pig who will quickly become prey to a predator.

Unfortunately this instinct still exists in our domestic piggies where predation isn't a problem.

Seperating them but so they can still smell and see each other might be best so your poorly one can rest easy in peace but isn't too lonely and the other one gets to do their own thing without feeling threatened.

We had to do this in Pip's last few days so he came upstairs and slept with us and Merry got used to being an only pig long before his brother actually died.

It's a hard decision to make but splitting them might be for the best. Animals are amazing and have suuch dignity about the end of life. Just enjoy them both for as long as you have them.x

Thanks

Thanks Merrypip, that was very helpful. I'm sad Whisky is ill as she is only 4 years and we have fed and looked after them to a very high standard. I'm seperating them at night but they are in the same room. They seem better in day when in bigger hutch outside and run.
