She had been unwell for a while so I'd separated her from Kim but the vet said she likely had scurvy and then a chest infection so I brought her home to die in the warmth

Kim used to bully her and for the last week I'd said Aggy wasn't thriving as she wasn't as big as Kim (they were both only six months old) but it became obvious this week she wasn't eating properly

Then she started to list and struggle to walk, while Kim stayed her usual chirpy greedy self

Yesterday she developed breathing difficulties and today she died

I'm worried already that Kim might grieve and become lonely, but I'm also worried she may bully any new mate she gets into starvation (although obviously I would be quicker to separate them this time)

If I plan to get a mate for her, should I get a baby pig, a grown up rescue pig, or maybe even a small rabbit?

oh dear i am so sorry, i dont know what what be best for a new friend but you cant put rabbits with guinea pigs because the are stronger and natuarly dominant, i am very sorry about your guinea pig though!:rose

sorry for you loss. definately not a bunny not only do they have different diet requirements the carry a bacteria (think its called cocci could be wrong) which is fatal to guineas. anyhow might be worth seeing if you can get a neutered male? it's the most stable of pairings. if not another girl totally depends on their personalities as to what is the best for her maybe speak to a local rescue and see if you can take your girl to find a new friend. a good supply of fresh veggies should avoid scurvy. perhaps it was maybe fungal or mites that got your poor girl?

I am sorry for your loss.

DEFINITELY NOT a bunny! Perhaps you can look to rehome a neutered male for Kim? She is young enough to be accepting of one and in a cross gender pairing, hierarchy is not as important as in a same gender couple.

If you rehome, you need to pass a home check to make sure that you have the appropriate accommodation (requirements can differ between rescues).
Here is a list of guinea pig rescues; you may have to ring around a bit: http://www.guineapigrehome.org.uk/gp/centres.asp
Alternatively, you can post in our "rehome - wanted" section. Please state your area.

Do you know how Ange came to have scurvy? It means that she didn't get enough vitamin C which is vital in guinea pigs and should not happen with the right kind of diet.
