So, I know that Alfalfa Hay is recommended only for young, pregnant, nursing or ill pigs. My male, Hedwig, was rescued outside from a shetler. I brought him to the vet just to make sure that he was doing okay. The vet clipped his nails, then came out and said he was healthy. She also suggested that I should feed him Alfalfa hay. I told her I'd probably mix it in with Timothy. I'm going to give him Alfalfa hay like the vet recommended, but would anyone happen to know why I was suggested to give him Alfalfa? Even if he is healthy? Note that I do give him grass, often.

I don't know why it was suggested but I would strongly recommend you don't feed it. It's high in calcium and isn't necessary. Another type of hay is much better. If you want to know why you're better off asking her.

Yeah, I didn't think I should give it to him. I was just curious if anyone else thought it was strange or to do what was recommended. He isn't malnourished...

Don’t feed it. It isn’t a grass hay and is too high in calcium for an adult piggy. No idea why a vet would suggest it unless they aren’t fully piggy knowledgeable
(Even for the pregnant and nursing sows that alfalfa can be given to, it still must only be given in strictly limited amounts (one small handful))

I won't feed it then, doesn't sound like a good idea lol. I looked at her kind of confused when she said that.
