I've been doing a lot of reading about dietary requirements for my three sows and I repeatedly read that adult piggies should get Timothy based pellets rather than Alfalfa ones. They are just 4 months young now and on the Mazuri pellets. When should I make the switch to Timothy pellets? I've checked almost every bag in my local pet stores - all of them seem to be Alfalfa, couldn't find any Timothy.

I'm in Canada...Is it really harmful or fatty for them to continue on alfalfa even when they're adults? For those of you who are close to me, which pellets do you feed your piggies? Some of the brands commonly discussed on here I can't seem to find, perhaps they are UK based?

Thanks for any help!

Alfalfa is high in Protein and Calcium making Tim based pellets better for guineas. Oxbow Cavy Cuisine might be easier for you to source?

tbh i am the same, i cant find any timothy based pellets near where i live.. my pigs have never really had any problems the only problems were with age, my two eldest have been on an alfalfa based pellet and they are 5 1/2 years old so in my experience it hasnt really shortened their life, or made them ill etc..

i'd choose timothy over alfalfa as alfalfa has high amounts of calcium which is a thing to watch out for and protein, as karenrgpr has said. however if your piggie is pregnant, breastfeeding, ill or under special dietry requirements alfalfa may/would be better. :)
