hi all,
iv had guinea pigs for a couple of yrs now and never had any problems but lately iv been having a reaction to them. They are kept on vet bed and i havnt changed their hay or food. It started with me being a little itchy after i handled them but has got worse and for the last week iv come up in a rash on my arms and legs after iv been with them even though i keep these areas covered. The rash on my arms has gotten worse and has started to peel and is painful. I'm thinking of starting piriton or wearing gloves when i handle them. I'm hoping it will go as quick as it started. Has anyone else had this and if so what helped them?

Nope sorry but are you sure its the guinea pigs and not anything else :-\

My friend is allergic to all animals and suffers from ashma(sp?) and she has to take anti-hisamean(sp?) everyday, due to owning a dog, cat, hamsters, guineas, and working with horses 9hrs a day. She has become used to taking something because she could not be without her animals plus its her job!

Surely the guineas would have affected you when you first got them, have you changed their bedding, has the company changed the material in their bedding, same with food and hay? Changed anything else within your home?

nope havnt changed anything.I dont understand why its happened now either i would of thought it would have started when i got them not now. I have a bad chest and wood shaving used to effect me thats why they are on vet bed.

You've not changed washing powder?
I'm allergic to our rats but make sure i wear thick jumpers with long sleeves, it doesn't stop it but makes it a bit better.

It may not be the piggies hair but the dirt under their claws, which is what it is with me & the rats, since i've clipped their claws i'm not quite as bad, can't think of anything else apart from antihistamines :)

I thought i was allergic to my girls or the hay, so i started taking antihistamines and it cleared up, but when i stopped taking it the sneezing and coughing and rashes come back, but believe it or not it was the herbs i was giving them.(so it could be something that you have only just started giving them).

thanks for the advice iv started taking antihistamines until i can figure out why its happening. iv always had to be careful when handling my cats that i dont touch my face until iv washed my hands but never had a problem with the pigs before. I'm sure its something in their room as the rash gets worse after iv been in there 10mins. i looked round today and couldnt see anything different.

the hay gives me running eyes, running nose, sneezing ::)

Molly and Rosie (our Rexes) both bring my neck up in a rash, it goes down in 30 mins or so, I'm okay with the smooth coated piggies though. Hope you manage to find a solution, it must be a right pain for you

My Daughter is the same we have had piggies for years and started getting a rash now she puts calendula cream on after handiling them and is fine ;)
