Hi everyone,

I was wondering if anyone knows if there is an alternate hay that I can feed my adult guinea pig. He is almost 2 years old. I believe that I am allergic to timothy hay, which due to the pandemic I am unable to get the testing to know for sure, and it is causing me some problems. When he licks me I appear to get some hives and my skin gets red patches. I also have been having some trouble with my eyes due to this allergy. I don't know if an allergy to one hay means and allergy to all, but I was hoping to try switching hays to see if that helps me.

Any suggestions or help is greatly appreciated!

I hope everyone is doing alright during these trying times <3

Hello,

There are quite a few different varieties of hay that are OK for adult piggies, mainly meadow hay, orchard hay, bermuda hay or oaten hay.
Apparently oaten and orchard hay are best for people with allergies, so you may want to give them a try.

You also may want to try a different brand of timothy hay, I've heard this can help too.

These hays all have different pros and cons, and there is a fabulous overview in the diet section: A Comprehensive Hay Guide

Anyway, hope this was helpful, and good luck :)

I have terrible hayfever all year round. I am allergic to most strong smells, perfume, pollen and mould spores so badly that if I don't take antihistamines all year the lining of my nose bleeds! :yikes:Meadow hay straight from the farm in a big farm bale is one hay I don't react to.
