When my piggies die at home of old age i am happy but when i break down and take them to the vets i put my trust in that vet!. Over the years every time i go to vets and they say i'll inject with an Antibiotic i assume my piggie will get better! As soon as he has that injection within hours they pass away AND this is after you pay for medication. i swear that inject is not an Antibiotic but some lethal dose of something because it doesn't work only puts piggie to sleep.

other piggies are all okay but i want to get a skin cream because i need this the most it seems. is there an oil i can get or cream on alternative medicine website of some kind? is there such thing as Alternative Medicine Vet?

thank you

PS i have a Fibreplex that i need to sell somewhere any idea? only used a cm.

Hello there,

It sounds like you've had a few bad experiences with vets. Please don't tar them all with the same brush as there are some very good and experienced vets out there. No, there are not any alternative medicine vets really out there. There are a few which occasionally practice homeopathy but most vets are practice with evidence based medicine with scientific backing and research so you tend not to find many vets into it.

Perhaps you can let us know your location and we can point you in the direction of a good reputable vet who will be able to help you out.

To add also, there is no such thing as a long acting/slow release type injection which would kill your Guinea pig within a few hours. Sadly I'm afraid some vets do not recognise how unwell a Guinea pig may be and simply send away with an antibiotic which can not solve the problem which can often have fatal consequences.

The key is to find a good reputable and experienced vet and ensure that your take your piggie to them as soon as you notice any signs of illness no matter how subtle as often Guinea pigs are very good at hiding very serious illness.

Have you tried Ashleigh Vets in Chorlton? They are exotics specialists and both Aidan and Michelle are great - they really know guinea pigs. They are worth the journey

Unfortunately, there's no assurance that pets will get better from a severe illness, even with appropriate vet treatment. That said, I think it's really important to find a vet that you like and trust so that you have someone to turn to when an illness comes up that needs treatments. There really isn't anything slow-acting and lethal that a vet would inject your pig with, but it is possible for less experienced vets to miss things that might be treatable if they don't know guinea pigs all that well. And, of course, nothing lives forever and there are things that even experienced vets can't treat, unfortunately. That said, I would probably take the time when it's not a crisis to research vets and see if there's someone you feel comfortable with who has expertise in guinea pigs. I absolutely adore my vet... I trust his medical knowledge implicitly, he respects me as an involved owner who is pretty knowledgeable about my animals and gives weight to what I see and observe at home, and we've got a good partnership going on that has seen one of my pigs who has had several serious medical problems through to old age that she would not have reached without both of us working together as a team on her behalf.

I'm not sure what you specifically need a skin cream for right now, but that might be the kind of non-emergent situation that lets you test out a vet and see how you feel about them when there's not a crisis going on. I find that having those kinds of low-stress assessments lets you feel out a vet and kind of give them an interview before you need them in a crisis.
