Hi,

Fifi might need to take baytril.
I was wondering what sugar free alternative squashes could I use incase the ribenna don't work out, I'm sure it might but alternative tastes are better incase she starts associating the syringe with nasty baytril.

Here are some links to other squashes please let me know which ones I could use, and if not please point me in the right direction I'm assuming piggys love sweet things so the sweet the better, long as it's sugar free right?

Just wondering I know I can't mix metacam with fruit squash but could I coat the tip of the syringe with the squash?

It would just make fifi a bit more cooperative I suppose.

My vet is probably one of the few who doesn't like people using Ribena. She prefers you to just give it straight and offer a treat straight after. It's only a quick mouthful.

My Jon was a nightmare the first time I tried to give him his med's but now he'll tolerate it as he gets some grass afterwards.

Metacam is fine by its self they all like that. Baytrill is foul, I eiether put a tiny bit of honey around the syringe bottom, or a touch of blackcurrant or cranberry juice I'm not sure on the amount. Not enough & they won't drink it, to much & it's two sugary. Hopefully someone will come up with the correct. Mix.

My avatar pig had bladder issues, and he never drank water. My vet had happy to give him 100% fresh orange juice mixed massively with water. You could try that, but I'd still recommend just giving it neat, it's only a few seconds.

Just to add that I would really recommend that you avoid anything that containers sweeteners.
They are an artificial substance, and something that I don't think piggies should have.
If you are using something then go for a natural fruit juice.

Thanks for the advice

I think I'll leave out the ribena and use blended fruit with a bit of water.

I agree with dosing directly if you can - either syringed in, or mixed with something tastier and syringed in, or mixed in a wet treat on a spoon.

While dosing in the water is alright in some circumstances, you can't get the dosage per 24hrs exact. Additionally you either have to treat the whole group (not good to give health animals ABs without very good reason), or separate out the ill one (for a herd species this can increase stress and decrease rate of healing).

A few years ago when I had Lenny & Gizmo, Lenny had a big abscess on his neck and the vet gave him baytril and told me to syringe up the baytril to the dosage amount and put about half the amount of orange juice in with it as baytril was yuck. I did this and Lenny loved it.

I used organic pure apple juice when my two had baytril recently. They werent over keen even then but didnt fight after the first couple of times. They were offered yummies straight after. Usually salad and apple peel.

That's exactly why my vet recommends not using Ribena. Yeah, it's sugar free but it has loads of othet stuff in it now great for pigs.

She was much happier with 100% fresh orange juice mixed at least 1:10 with water. My pig liked it too, he drank alot more water ("joos") after the orange was added.

To be honest, I give the baytril to mine straight and then syringe some water or mushed pellets afterwards to wash off the taste (just one syringe full). THEN I give a treat, whether that is herbs or fresh grass. Don't give the treat directly, as it will taste of baytril. ;)

it is easier to get the baytril in when you can do it in one fell swoop. Most piggies are actually not too bad to handle once you have worked out the trick. Assert your dominance beforehand, and praise and give your love lavishly afterwards.
