Hey guys! I haven't been on here lately at all. I go on the Irish guinea pig forum, but I'm always so busy lately . . . rolleyes
Anyway, if anyone remembers my guinea pigs, I thought I'd give an update!
I can't remember if I posted about this, but I built some lovely cages on shelves in my shed. One across the back for the girls, is about 6'X3' almost, and then one at the side is 5'X2' ish . . . and they're open topped and divided by wire.
And one day, about 2 months ago, I go into the shed to find Cenci in with the girls! He had been attacked by Moxie, they had not been getting along too great, and obviously had jumped the 30cm high divider cos he was so scared. So I put him into a hutch alone temporarily, while thinking about dividing the girls cage in two so he can have some of it and debating whether I should get him neutered or not. I didn't think the others would jump over, as it had never happened before, and I thought Cenci obviously was just terrified so he did.
But then a couple of days later, I go into the shed to find one of the baby girls (well not quite babies, but young) in with the boys, with no idea of how she got over the divider, being so tiny. I thought maybe I left a tunnel too close to the divider and she jumped on it, but I was really confused how she managed it! Afterall, lots of people keep guinea pigs side by side in C&C cages. So I thought it must have been the tunnel, because there's no way she could jump 30cm!
Then I went back into the shed and the boys had gotten in with the girls. I thought there is no way old Meeko jumped over the wire, maybe he climbed? Obviously then I moved the boys, and I decided to make the cage divider higher. But then after a few days I noticed what looked like one of the girls running right through the divider. It turned out they were peeling up the wire slightly in one corner, and they were somehow getting through a tiny tiny hole! I had inspected the wire for holes and had somehow never noticed this :red
Anyway, I fixed it and the boys got to go back in their cage. But then one day, I put Meeko and Moxie out, and put Cenci on his own in their cage, so he could talk to the girls through the wire. He got so scared, just from the smell of Moxie I guess, that he jumped out of the cage. I went into the shed to find him on the floor with the rabbits, sitting in their litter tray, terrified. But thank God he was ok, after his 4 foot drop . . .
So I didn't risk putting him back, so I put him in a hutch with Meeko. Since Moxie had the girls company next to them, and Moxie had started to pick on Meeko. I know that was aggravated by being next to girls, and Moxie had become quite bossy, silly pig. Probably getting his own back because the others used to boss him around when he was young!
So even though I love the cages, they've caused drama . . .
Sukie is the only one who got pregnant, I think! She's huge now and I'm actually delighted. There are not many guinea pigs breeders at all at all, or rescue guinea pigs, in Ireland, so should be ok finding good homes for them. The other girls aren't fat at all. Babies should be born soon and everything is ready for them and I'm looking forward to it.
But sadly, in December, Moxie died suddenly. I have no idea why. It was +4 degrees that night, so it wasn't from cold. He had food and water. No idea what happened. He had been his usualy lively loud self the day before. He was less than a year old.
Then Christmas day Meeko died, but we were expecting it, he was really sick with kidney failure and old. I was so sad about them both, but especially shocked about Moxie . . .
So Cenci lives on his own now, but he can talk to the girls through the wire and has a big cage to himself. If Sukie has a boy then I might keep one, but I don't really want more pets . . . but I feel bad for Cenci so I probably will.
So there's been good and bad news, if you count a new pregnancy as good, which I do
because I could never regret the new babies.
Now for some photos to see how big they are getting and all that. wow, sorry for the long post! I dunno if anyone will read it all, and people might see how stupid I was with the cages . . . but like I said, I was just so confused and couldn't see how they did it.
My four girls, a fat Sukie, Edie, Lola and Libby
Lola, Edie and Libby. I love how they're turning into little clones of her, although they're abbysinian, and she is kinda aby-ruvian and no relation
Cucumber time, the top of their house is so dirty looking here! Gotta clean it, they jump up there and poo rolleyes
I didn't get any good photo of Cenci, but oh well, his house is clean, he doesn't jump on it!
