I stopped poking about in my 5 year old boars anal sack as much a couple weeks ago as he was initially having some trouble with it but that seemed to reduce when I did my bi-daily visual checks/glances, so I just left him to it.

Today I decided to look a bit further as I hadn’t in a while and found this massive plug of hair and mucus.
Over the past day or two I have sometimes found him with his hair fluffed up, but it has been cold and it’s been very infrequent so I was just keeping an eye on it for the time being.

Now I have found this, I needed tweezers and two different “trips” to get this out, I hope he feels a bit more comfy now!

I felt horrible that I had not checked in a while, I am going to go back to checking every couple of days. I dont want to do it too often as it is quite invasive but just enough to hopefully stop build ups like this.

Yes that smell! I'm sitting here when I should be doing health checks and weigh ins today. I'm putting it off! With six boars in the house there's bound to be one that needs a smelly job doing. Oh what a glamorous life I lead. :)):))
Six sounds like a handful, I have recently "upgraded" to 3 boars and I'm dreading all the muck outs already 🤣

@Wiebke could I just check. I’ve had 10 boars in total and I’ve dealt with impaction of an older boar which looks like very soft poops (brown) and is round like a marble which needs clearing at least once a day. This type of blockage (white sticky stuff) I get occasionally with all boars. I just clear it when I see it sticking out of their pocket/pouch. Is that ok? Or should I be poking around inside to clear it? Thank you.

After having 5 girls I rescued an older boar. He came in not so great condition, nails like nothing I have seen before and matted hair. Got him all sorted but on more investing on boars I decided to check the anal sack…….well let’s say I have never smelt or seen anything like it. He must of been so uncomfortable! The size of it was huge. Poor boy. I make sure I regularly check this now and he’s been good ever since!
Here he is having cuddles on the sofa.

Hi

I think that is more of a question for an experienced full boars owner, which I quite frankly am not.

I wouldn't poke around regularly to see if it needs to be cleared, you can usually see a bit poking out or the sack looks slightly stretched when it builds up. I look when I weigh them, sometimes all looks normal but the smell gives it away. I have found it to be a problem more often in older boars although I have had two young ones who had a tendency to get build ups. Interestingly both of these were medium to long haired and I have wondered if the hair contributes to the problem as the smegma is usually mixed with hair. I would say most of my boars over the years have never needed their sacks cleaning although I do occasionally pull out the odd bit of hay or very regularly wood shavings in the days I used them.
At the moment I have Brillo (5) who gets a lot of smegma in his sack and wrapped round his penis and probably needs cleaning about once a month.
Todays smelly yucky sack though was my foster!

I’m certainly not a boar specialist but I can say in my case I am now going to check the anal sack “properly” around once a week, usually a very slight “pull” does the trick to see if there’s anything that needs removed, this is only the case in Winston as I know he struggles with it. 90% of the time the issue starts by sticking out, but the “find” in the images attached above wasn’t even visible until I had a deeper look. He does have a slight hardening in one of his back knees (minor arthritic indication) so perhaps he finds it a bit more taxing to keep everything clean.

Whereas I had a boar of similar age and I think maybe once or twice I ever messed around with his anal sack his whole life, he was very clean.
Winston is by far my stinkiest boy, I’ve been pulling all sorts out of there since he turned 4!
