I know that several of you, like me, are living with allergies to their pets. This is something I have put up with for some time, and now that the piggies live outside it is manageable (except cleaning out day, which is a nightmare).

But now I suspect that one of my children is showing signs of allergies as well. It's one thing choosing to live with my own allergies, and quite another making a child suffer unnecessarily because of my decision to keep pets.

What would you do? I am going to give it a bit longer because I'm not sure if it is a guinea pig allergy - she always has skin problems at this time of year as she is allergic to most sun tan lotions, so it could just be linked with that. But if she is allergic, I'm not sure what I'll do as in the autumn the piggies will be inside again.

Is it possible to get tests done at the doctors to see if it is the pigs she's allergic to? Would be a real shame if she was. Maybe getting a shed for autumn/winter so they're not in the house? Can't think of anything else I'm afraid.

Hi Lizzie,

I'm a mum too and if one of my girls was struggling because of a pet allergy I would have to rehome. The thought really upsets me but our children must come first although would a shed be possible for the winter?

Hope it isn't the pigs though!

I thought my daughter had an allergy and we decided to re-home if she did. I wouldn't put my kids through that. You can ask your GP for tests and see what the outcome is. If she is allergic it doesn't mean you can't have pets, there are some good medication or you could get a dog that has minimal hair loss. Don't give up. xx

Get some tests done on the children to see what they are actually allergic to. You might be lucky and it's not pet hair or hay.

It is not so common to be allergic to guinea pig hair but more to hay, which is one of piggy staple foods, so find out and you might be able to change the pets in your house to the "non-allergic "version.
