Evening guys.

Just wondering if anyone has any pigs who have received an anti inflammatory injection? Rosie Pig has a sore leg so we took her to the vet today who gave her an injection.the vet did say she would be sleepy but she is worrying me a little bit as she is far from her usual self.

Does anyone know if this is usual & how long the effects of the injection will last?

What was the injection? Was it a steroid? How is she today?

Healing vibes to Rosie x

Thanks for the replies.

No,we are not sure but the invoice says Torbusegic(?).she was very drowsy even late last night & was very still during lap time (which is very rare as she is a nosey fidgety pig).she did eat a little before bed.she had a little wander around this morning when we checked her but we left her to have a lie in.

Torbugesic is the drug Butorphanol. This is a pain relief and slight sedative drug. I'm not surprised your piggie was a bit flat after this injection. This drug can wear off anywhere from 4 hourly (which is the usual dose timing in a piggie) to 12 hourly which is the usual dose time in a cat/dog. If she is till no longer herself this evening then i would give your vets a call. Very odd that they gave this as an injection and not something called buprenorphine which would have had a less sedative effect.

Thank you, that's a great help.you seem to know an awful lot! The vet did weigh Rosie Pig before the injection to work out the dosage. She is much better this evening, seems to be eating as normal but one of our pigs now has a runny bottom.would you know if this is a side effect of the injection?

not sure if she is still using her leg as much as we would hope but the vet did say to give her a few days.

Thanks again.

I'm a qualified veterinary nurse - hence the knowledge. A runny bum wouldn't usually be a side effect. Keep a very close eye on her, diahorrea can cause some dehydration if bad. I hope she starts to feel better soon. May be worth another check up if her stools are not better in a day or so.

x.

You sound like a good nurse!

No sign of a runny bottom last night so it looks like its nothing to worry about (it could have been her house mate Emily Pig).Rosie is moving around much better and showing little sign of any more trouble with her leg.we will keep an eye on her as she does enjoy climbing.

Thanks again for your help and advice!
