Sadly my vets have fallen short so I’m looking for some advice.

Firstly, how long does it take for ABs to leave the system? I’m worried about changing onto new ones and if it will have an effect. She’s currently on co-trimoxazole and I have zithromax and marbocyl, I’m not sure which to try first. My vet recommended the marbocyl first so I guess I could try that, but we only have 10 tablets so they said use the zithromax after that.

Secondly, I got some advice from The Cat & Rabbit clinic and they recommended certain doses but they’re different from what mine said. It’s my gut instinct just to go with Simons advice as I’m worried about over dosing. In fact one of the measurements is double what he recommended so that’s worrying.

Thirdly, the marbocyl is in tablet form. Am I okay to crush this, mix with water and syringe it? Both vets said 1 tablet by mouth once daily but there’s no way she’ll take a tablet surely...

As always, thanks very much for the help!

I am linking @Jaycey and @furryfriends (TEAS) in for you. Jaycey has the most knowledge re. medications and furryfriends experience with looking after very ill guinea pigs on several antibiotics.

Normally it takes about 10-12 hours, maximum 24 hours to metabolise a full dose.

Thank you! I’m wondering if it would be okay to miss her ABs this evening with the view to start her new ones tomorrow morning...

Start the new antibiotic the day after you have finished the previous one. With Marbocyl, you make up some syringe food, break the tablet in half, draw up some syringe food, pop the tablet in the end of the syringe and then syringe it into the mouth. Then do the same with the other half.

What dose of Zithromax have you been prescribed?

Thank you so much, I’ll give it a go tomorrow morning. I only have 10 days worth so hopefully that will be okay. The vet then prescribed the Zithromax for 2 weeks afterwards.

The dose that Simon recommended was 20mg per 1kilo of body weight. The powder I have got is 600mg/15ml so I worked that out to be 0.5mls per day but my vets said 0.65mls per day.

I might as well become a vet with the amount of work I’m putting in this girl :))

Once the Zithromax is mixed, the dose is 1ml per kilo body weight. Therefore, for a piggy weighing 850g the dose would be 0.85ml or for a piggy weighing 900g the dose would be 0.9ml etc. This dose can be given as one dose per day or the amount split over two doses per day.

Are all the medicines the same? That would make it double at 40mg per kilo, is that right?

It says add 9.5ml of water which makes it 200mg per 5mls.

How much does your guinea pig weigh?
She’s varying around 1200g atm x

Looks very similar to the stuff I have though not the same brand. Don’t suppose it makes much difference!

So the other 2 doses are too low? Should I do 0.55ml twice daily then?

Sorry just a quickie about the marbocyl, the email from Simon said 1 tablet once a day whereas my general vet said twice daily. I’ll assume I go by Simons recommendation of once a day? They’re 5mg tablets.

Thank you again x

That marbocyl was the same for my pig too, one tablet a day. From Simon

Thank you! It was a pain to break and Tonks spat one half out repeatedly haha but at least that’s done for the day.
You must get it far back into the mouth and then they can't spit it out. Did you do it with some syringe food? It is really important that it all goes in properly.

I snap the marbocyl tablet in half, put it in the end of a 1ml syringe with about 0.25 of critical care in, and syringe. Dot has never spat it out. But pigs will be little sometimes. I do half a tablet, you will hear it crunch when it hits the back teeth, try and make sure you are in a quiet place for this, then i let her have the second half of the tablet when the first has gone down ( when she stops chewing)

You can buy a tablet/pill cutter from Boots.

Yea I have one but the tablet is so tiny it just kinda moved around in there haha, might try with a sharp knife for tomorrow’s one.

Yes I did with syringe food, yea I think I didn’t do it deep enough so lesson learnt! The little madam was clenching her mouth shut after the first half :))

Yea that’s what I did but with more feed as she could do with a bit more bulking up bless her. The first bit went down a dream but she was prepared for the second bit haha. It soon washed down though.
