Hiya! So I went to the vets today for both of our piggies who have colds and starts of infections. They both been put on anti inflammatories and antibiotics. My question is about the antibiotics enrofloxacin...
Goofy needs 0.17mls twice a day and Max needs 0.19/mls twice daily, vet told me to syringe feed which iv done but iv just noticed the bottle says needs to be diluted, she never told me this and now I'm worried! Do you think I should dilute or not?surely she would have told me if it needed diluting?Help! Thanks

is it a syrup ?you do not usually have to dilute it,pro biotics such as pro c ,avipro plus, fibreplex is good to give an hour after the antibiotic.so the good bacteria can reform.this antibiotic can be harsh on guinea pigs digestive system.you can get these probiotics from vet uk,viovet on line.pro c from pets at home.I would read the leaflet that comes with the medicine.if really in doubt ring your vet for clarification.

Hi and welcome

Can you please post a picture of the label or post the exact text? We also need the weight of your two boys to compute the dosage. How piggy savvy is your vet? The dosage is still pretty low, so I don't think that you need to worry about overdosing.

Enroflaxin is usually prescribed under the brand name baytril, which already comes as a solution. it is about the most horrible tasting medication, so if you have to dilute, do so with ribena to cover the taste.

Here is our illustrated step-by-step guide to syringe feeding. Please make sure that you never give more than a mouthful at any time, which is between 0.1-0.5 ml, depending on the size and fitness of your guinea pigs. this is especially important when dealing with respiratory issues, as anything that goes down the wrong way can make things worse. The same goes for medicating and watering.

Hiya sorry I'm having a few probs with the camera on my phone but I'll type what it says on their prescription label on the box we were given.
Enrobactin oral solution 25mg/10ml
Please give 0.19ml for max and 0.17ml for goofy every 12 hours.
Then it just says for animal treatment only and keep out of reach of children.I don't know their weights I have to admit that I didn't write them down when she weighed them.Emma x

That is an already mixed solution (done at the vets) and it is the same strength as baytril; it is a fairly low dosage. You just give the amount stated on the label.

If you struggle with getting it into your piggies, suck up as much ribena as you do enrobactin to make it a bit more palatable. more tips on what to do with uncooperative piggies in the guide link I have posted in my last post. ;)

Weigh your piggies daily before you give them their dinner. Start with offering additional syringe feed if the baytril causes loss of appetite or there is a weight loss.

OK fab thankyou,it just worried me as it says always dilute before use!xx

A lot of the time the vet will dilute it for you prior to giving it to you, which is what it sounds like this preparation is. My experience from mixing my own Baytril (I had a pig that was on a suppressing dose of Baytril for a long time and used to buy in bulk and mix at home) was that the pure antibiotic was transparent and smelled very potent. The base that I mixed it into was colored (yellow in my case.) If the liquid is anything other than totally clear, I would guess that the base has been added.
