I am so pleased to hear that she is getting better. I love a happy ending.:)

Brilliant news, keeping everything crossed that she continues to improve. Trying a water bowl sounds a good idea, although be prepared for it to be tipped over and poo'd in!:)) Another trick is to wash your veggies and leave them very wet if you are concerned she isn't getting enough to drink, that way you know she is taking some fluid in, you could also try offering some cucumber.

A friend had a piggy who had similar problems and she had to have his teeth trimmed every 8 weeks or so, in between times he was fine. She always knew when he needed them re-doing as he would begin to drink more (I guess to fill himself up a bit) and would obviously start to struggle to pick up food. Despite having to have regular dental work he lived to a grand old age bless him.

I am so glad to hear she is doing so much better, I think what you are doing is fine, letting her eat then topping her up with syringe food. Syringing water to her also is good. Just keep checking on her weight, at least once daily until she is eating normally by herself again.

I find that if they start to make an improvement it is usually at the point where you are just entering the 'despair' stage, at least a few of mine have done that to me in the past!

I'm so glad she is getting better, i love my piggies like babies ,so can imagine what you were going through. :...

Just wanted to update, after keeping Gizmo separate from the other piggies while the ate she has slowly built up her speed at eating, for days she would only eat green beans, coriander an strawberries ignoring everything else but today she ate a huge plate of food with a mixture of lettuce, beans, broccoli, tomato, coriander and pepper :))

Tonight I decided to leave her with the others to see if she got a fair share, I fed them coriander and blueberries and she ate just as fast as they did and plenty of it :)):))

I'm so pleased, will have to keep an eye on those teeth but for now she appears to be back on track and gaining weight :)

Hi everyone

Poor Gizmo seems to have stopped eating again, she eats the pellets with no problem but in the last three days just doesnt seem interested at all in any fresh vegetables, fruits or hay apart from coriander and strawberries.

She has lost weight again and looks old (she is only three) :(

She is drinking plenty of water and seems quite energetic but just seems unable to eat she goes to the food, nudges it and then leaves it, I really dont know what to do she cant need her teeth filing again as its only been a few weeks since the last time and she was doing so well.

Any suggestions?

Thanks x

Sometimes the teeth can need doing almost weekly:( If they are not eating correctly .Its really not practical for a guinea pig to have teeth done regulary if a GA is being used.
I would really try to take up the offer of help on here perhaps someone can help you out with transport, good luck

Hi Gillian, welcome to the forum.

To start a new thread, you need to go to the Health & Illness section (http://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/forumdisplay.php?f=12) and there is a button labelled "New Thread", click on this and you can start out your own topic about your boar, and as such members can advise you without getting confused with this being a thread about a different pig.

For now I will answer your questions, I can carry my answers over to your own thread if needs be. It sounds like your vet did not do enough to help your boar, so when you start your thread, it will help to mention whereabouts you are, someone may know of a good vet or rodentologist in your area. From the sounds of things, the molars need looking at - drooling is a classic sign of molar trouble.

It can also be a sign of oral fungal problems, so the Daktarin Oral Gel is still worth pursuing; you use a 1ml syringe (without needle) to withdraw the dose from the tube, then administer to piggie the same as any other medication. The dosage for an adult piggie is usually 0.5ml 3x daily, and this would be maintained for a minimum of three weeks, with the dose gradually reduced to 2x daily in week two, and 1x daily in week three. This dosing shcedule can be flexible in some cases but is a good starting point.

I can also email you a factsheet about syringe feeding, I feel you'd get a lot from it and it would make a big difference to your boar. If you drop me an email at [email protected] I can send the factsheet across today.

Hi,

Have you tried making a pureed mash type meal out of pellets softened with water, maybe some carrots that have been boiled mashed and some fresh herbs and maybe some oats

The 'stickiness' of the mash meal might be easier for him to pick up and keep in their mouth also it would be softer to chew?
