any advise on piggies greatfully recieved

i have just taken on a piggy. he turned up at a friends farm just before xmas and was living rough in her barn8...
she asked around but no one new where he had come from and no one wanted him, so i took himx)

he has had a bit of a tough time i think as his ear has been ripped through but was fully healed when i picked him up.
so far i have given him
unlimited piggy food, fresh veg, hay , vitamin drops in his water, dried meadow herbs, forgot to say he is being kept indoors until spring.
he was really smelly so yesterday i gave him a rodent shampoo flannell bath to sweeten him up a bit, and also he has had a mite powdering too.
should i worm him do you think?
any advise would be great as he is my first piggy, i have to rabbits, rexy and coco, and 3 gerbils , nibbles, numpty and daisy xx
 
i will try and get a piccy up for you tomorrow, he is kind of brown with ginger splodges on his face, such a funny little bloke.
he has only made a noise once,:(

Aw, I'm glad he found himself a good home, he sounds lovely, and you sound like your doing a fabulous job, can't wait for pigtures :)
 
You sound like you've got everything under control, lucky piggy. I've had my pigs for almost a year and it's only in the last 3 months or so that Benny has started Shouting to me.
 
Thats really good of you :) Take the vit drops and put them else where ! They change the taste of water and a piggie might not like it and stop drinking. Cavies also get enough vit C from veggies.
 
Hiya - glad someone has taken in the piggy - well done.

I have heard bad things about powder on piggies and if they groom themselves after it can hurt them, i have heard of fatalities from that before now. I would leave that alone for now as it could do harm.

Other than that you sound like you have everything under control. Just spend some times going through all the advice on here and you will be an expert in no time. :)
 
Hi! Good on you for taking on the poor boy.

Please do not you mite powder - it's pretty useless! Ideally give xeno450 (or xeno 50 for babies) for mites; any form of ivermectin will do. It is a good idea to treat him for mites as well as worming with panacur. both medicines you can get at the vets.

For a good and balaced diet, look at this thread. If you give a mix of veg that contains high vitamin C veg, you need not put vitamin drops in his water. The water has the tendency to go all green and slimy with drops really quickly, even if you change the water daily as you should! Please try and check whether he is really drinking from the bottle - many piggies have to yet learn it. If he doesn't, you can either feed a bit more watery veg like cucumber, celery, tomato etc. or put a bowl in and replace twice daily if necessary (as some piggies prefer it as a WC).

The mainstay of a piggy diet is hay, hay, hay, then veg and pellets.
