Hi Everyone,

Bit of a desperate thread...

History:

My Guinea Pig Bob had to have his eye removed back in January and all was fine after the surgery, he put back on his weight he lost and 200 grams more and went back to being his happy little self.

Recently the wound where his eye was removed has started pussing. I have taken him to the vets and they have given me a 3 week course of Baytril. I have to take him back to the vets on 13th May for a check-up. He has been on baytril for a week and half now and the wound isn't getting much better, there is still quite a lot of pale yellow/white puss coming from the wound, particuarly if you apply pressure. The vets are talking about re-opening the wound to flush everything out.

The problem:

I am going to Portugal on 14th May and I am concerned that if i take him back to the vets on 13th and they say it need to be re-opened then I will then be going away for 6 days to Portugal and although my family can pop in and feed them etc, they are not experienced enough to deal with a Guinea Pig post-op e.g. syrienge feeding (we had to do this before) giving him medication and weighing him, plus popping in a couple of times throughout the day won't be enough.

Is there any guinea pig lovers in the Norwich area that would mind taking in my Bob and looking after him whilst I am away? I know this is asking a lot...but I just thought I would try as I am at a loss as what to do and I don't particuarly want to leave Bob in the care of someone who isn't knowledgeable. He may well be fine, but this is just in case...

Firstly Bayril is pretty useless for dealing with pus. Zithromax would be a far better antibiotic. Although I'm not close, I do offer pet boarding and have access to one of the best guinea pig vets. I would be able to take your piggy to see Simon Maddock at the Cat and Rabbit Care Clinic in Northampton.
 
Thank you for your reply @furryfriends (TEAS) I have just booked an appointment for 6pm tonight to get some Zithromax. How long a course would you reccommend I should ask for? I don't go away until next Saturday, so I am hoping this will be resolved by then...especially with this new anti-biotic, as the Baytril is not working at all.

Main thing is Bob seems 100% fine in himself - still eating, running around and hasn't lost any weight. But want to try and sort this puss issue before I go.

Are you based in Northampton? My vet is pretty good, but i couldnt see her last time and wasn't confident in the vet I saw. However, I am seeing my favourite vet tonight so fingers crossed. I suppose my concern is that if the puss issue hasn't sorted by the time I go away I need to find a knoweldgeable and loving guine pig person to help me - whatever the cost!
 
Do your vets offer boarding ? Or would that be too costly? xx
 
I think Furry Friends if offering to board your pig while you are away? She can then take him to see Simon if needed.
 
oh! I thought you meant that you could take Bob to the vets in Northampton! Thank you so much for your offer @furryfriends (TEAS) I will go to the vets tonight and see what they say about the new anti biotic and if they do boarding and will then get back in contact. I really appreciate the offer and if needs be I will most definitely take you up on it - Bob is lovely and very friendly so hopefully he will be a good patient to have :-) he loves giving people kisses!
