Sadly one of our pair of rescue neutered boars died aged just 2 earlier this year, leaving his brother.

Despite Reeces , who lives mostly inside with lots of interaction/ things to do seeming quite unfazed or altered, I felt we need to try to find him a companion to spend his life with.

We’re on the waiting list with 2 rescues. Reeces has just had a couple of days on a date in their v expert hands but proved to be too excited for the sow he met .

Appreciate bonds must have some element of alchemy like our relationships to work,. But wondered if anyone has any pointers. The rescue has kindly said a date with a boar may be more balanced?

Any help appreciated. I hope we can make a good choice but concerned that he’s been a single piggy for some time (not sure if that is significant?)

Thanks all,

I'm sorry for your loss.

Any bond comes down to character compatibility, there is very little you can do to influence it - it is down to them.

If your boar has only lived with a boar previously, then being excited when meeting sows for the first time is entirely to be expected.
All you can do is try him with other piggies until you find one which fits and/or he calms down around the ladies.

Thanks for your reply. Makes a lot of sense to explain his first experience of interacting with a sow being too much to handle.
Very lucky that the rescues offer the dating services they do, quite involved. hopefully we will get another chance.

It can take several tries to find the right friend but he will find one but the fact you have a dating service available to you will make all the difference. He will find the perfect friend! Keep us posted

Boars very often lose it when they meet sows and breathe the heady sow pheromone perfume for the first time. The brain gets kind of short-circuited for a day or two.

All is not lost. At least you have the full field for him to play - boars and sows. Many rescues are currently swamped with unwanted pandemic pet boars, so keeping an open mind on that angle as well, may get you there better.

Ultimately, what you want is to find a companion he is happy with - that is key - gender, age and looks all come a long way after...
