At the moment I use newspaper with shavings on top, and lots of hay in the sleeping area of the hutch. I have just run out of newspaper and as we have 5 pigs and don't regularly buy a paper, is there anything else I could use to line the hutch?

I like the sound of using fleece instead of shavings but do I still need paper underneath?

Thanks!

under fleece you need old towels. maybe you could use old towels under your woodshavings? or ask neighbours to keep their old newspapers for you?

You would need paper underneath the fleece... If you dont buy paper then could you ask your family and neighbours ec to keep their newspapers and you collect them at the end of the week? I do that with my nan as she has the times everyday and The Sunday Times is a godsend for cleaning out the piggies! One sundays paper lasts two clean outs!:))

I used to use just what you use, however a week ago i converted to fleece bedding ive still not made my mind up on it but in our cage at the moment working from bottom up is a towel, 2 disposable pampers changing mats, 2 towels and a fleece then there is hay in the bed area and shavings in their litter tray

i se fleecing - you can use towels or newspaper under it - currently i use newspaper because i have an endless supply of it!

How bout at work put a notice up to ask for everyones paper, and ask family and friends?

I'm lucky that i live in a block of about 14 flats, all our local newspapers go into the communal post room and hardly anyone picks theirs up. so we all get two newspapers, but i end up with loads!

lol me too Claire, although as moved out i cannot do that! my rents give me enough though!

I have never used newspaper in my hutches. I use a deep base of shavings and then put loads of hay in the bedding part.:) I know some people don't agree with shavings but I've never had a problem with them yet in 30 years of keeping rabbits, piggies and hamsters.

I use a mixture of all of what's been mentioned. Newspaper in the bedrooms with fleeces on top. I buy all sorts of fleeces from charity shops, cut them up and put them in and they love to snuggle in them. Newspaper in the living areas. A litter tray (shoebox lid, cut down cornflake box etc.) with shavings in. And a rack with hay in to eat. The shavings and hay are at the farthest end away from the fleeces to stop bits getting on to them. These are in the outside hutches. May do away with shavings alltogether when I bring them into indoor cages for winter? x

I use lino in my hutches, granted, i use newspaper then bedding then hay, but if i ran out of newspaper i could always just use thick bedding then hay.

The rabbts wendyhouse is covered with lino and they have two poo trays with paper and hay in it. they also have a couple of carpet tiles from B and Q to sit on if the lino gets too cold...

They only have hay in their poo trays as they will wee wherever hay is so its the only way to keep them litter trained! The carpet tiles have been good as well as they will destroy anything soft and fluffy i put in their cage... Pyramid houses, tunnels etc...all gone in a week...rolleyes

They get cardboard boxes (free from the petshop) which i fill with hay and they like to hop in them and snuggle down when the weather gets colder... It is quite funny seeing them sitting in a box with " Rabbit and rice dog food" on it...:))
