Hi everyone,

We have some damp in our house. We're using a dehumidifier to get rid of the excess moisture and then the landlord is (hopefully) dealing with the source of the problem. Does anyone know if it is sage to have a dehumidifier running in the room where our little ladies live?

It shouldn't be an issue. It's not like you're putting any unnatural scents into the air. Actually, humid/moist air should be avoided with guinea pigs I believe. When they are subjected to humidity long-term they can develop respitory distress, which is yet another reason bathrooms and laundry rooms are to be avoided when housing guinea pigs. If anything, the dehumidifier is a GOOD thing. The only thing is if you're using fresh hay. It'll dry out the hay more which is never nice.

@Seven I wasn't aware that humid air was a health risk to piggies. Mine are housed in the spare bedroom with an ensuite bathroom where we use the shower. They have lived in that room for 8 months now. We have a dehumidifier on the ceiling of the bathroom that comes on every time the light is turned on. Is this dangerous to my pigs health?

It should be fine. We run a dehumidifier sometimes without any problems. I would think that damp and the consequent risk of mold would be harder on anything living in the space than a dehumidifier.

I'm sure it's fine as long as you have the dehumidifier and that you're not placing the guinea pigs directly in the bathroom. I'm sure complications would've occured by now if there was an issue, 8 months is a long time.

Low and stable humidity

The room which houses your guinea pig should not experience high humidity or fluctuations in humidity. Humidity can be just as bad for your guinea pig as drafts. Avoid areas close to showers where humidity levels soar during and after use. Avoid laundry rooms. Basements finished as part of a home also tend to have higher humidity levels. Be sure of the humidity level before choosing a basement location, and make sure indirect sunlight is also available.

Oh no :( So you recommend that I don't keep them in that room?

l dont think it makes that much diferance , l just beleve that a dehumidifer helps to create a friendlier environment
