As my girls are settling in and becoming more comfortable around me, I've noticed that they seem to be having some issues.

If one is too close to another, there is a bit of a grumbling sound from one and a squeal from another, I don't think they are fighting. They are only a year old just turned and I know that they sort out dominance so it's probably normal but it's a very loud, low grumbling sound which one is making more than the other, I've noticed it once or twice with the smallest when she's gotten scared by the dog running around the house but they've been doing it to each other, like when one was eating, she started making the noise as the other approached her.

I'm sure it's normal and very rare but I know that guinea pigs can suddenly change towards one another even if they have been together for a year.

I've pin pointed the noise to rumble strutting I think it's called, it says it's a sign of mating, one walks after another making this noise, is it normal for two females to behave that way around one another? I hope I've not got a male and female, but I would have thought if they were male and female that they would have mated already by now as they are a year old?

That is a season you are witnessing.. Girls do rumble at each other during season time, Widget will in fact rumble at anything in the cage :))

There will be chasing, mounting and rumbling strutting.

Have a look at this thread When Sows Experience A Strong Season (videos)

Know the anxious feeling.
Before I joined the forum and started to learn so much Jemimah experienced strong seasons.
It worried me so much I took her to the vet to checked her to make sure there was nothing else- just a strong season.
Good luck.

Thanks for your help. Was a bit concerning at first but they’ve calmed a little more now but at least I know what’s going on
