The title is maybe a bit useless I am going to pick up six and seven week old baby and they are going into midwest cage and I’m not sure whether to put a lid on or not. I mean one of my older girls seems to be capable of jumping in and out of their hay tray and up to a mezzanine level that we briefly had but they would definitely not get out of the cage but I’m a bit concerned the little ones maybe?

When I finally introduce them all I hate the thought of having lids on all of them because it’s like a little prison and it’s inconvenient for me! But I don’t want the little ones to escape

I would maybe keep an eye on them then you can decide whether they need a lid or not. Then when all are bonded, you can perhaps make the sides of the cage taller (if you’re using grids or panels) and make sure there’s nowhere they can jump off and escape. The other thing to consider is whether they’d be able to squeeze out of the sides.

My girls first lived in a ball pit. I did block the hole but one of them escaped through the hole several times. She’d run to get back in soon as she saw me. They all had a habit of climbing on top of hides but thankfully never tried to jump out. This was comforting especially when it came to the boys who lived in the penthouse!
