Chrebun
Junior Guinea Pig
My piggie just had three babies one babies back legs dont worry, cant stop crying.any advice on if their little life will be okay? Will mum leave it out i am devastated my pet rat had paralysed legs but never my pigs
This was wrote very early and a very upset worried me. Hind legs not working called vets and advised me same as a thought to get some milk supplements. Iv never had an animal from birth with this issue my pet rat developed this in old age, just very heartbreaking watching lil pig not make it around as well as the other two. Moved them to a smaller space and keeping watch
Thank you so much for your help. He/she is a little sweetheart and i phoned the vet this morning advised a suppliment but to be honest i felt like they just repeated what i suggested, and wernt to interested in helping it was a kind of he may pass away anyway no advice no tips! I went and got some suitable milk as he wasnt able to nurse to much as he wasnt strong enough to pull himself in and out whilst the other two babies are jumping around. Iv bought everything i think i may need as precautions. Just hoping their little legs kick in and they stay strong,Thank you so much for replyingBIG HUGS
It can sometimes happen that newborn pups can't move their back legs at first because they have been in a cramped position inside the womb. See whether gentle massage of the legs can help. It can take some hours to a couple of days for the feeling to come back gradually.
If there is any damage to the spine, then the prognosis is less good.
The baby will hopefully start to crawl around and drink from their mother. Please don't panic. It can take up to a day for the mother's milk bar to kick in; until that has happened, mum won't nurse the babies. The babies are provided for that gap.
Only step in with feeding support if the pup is losing more than 10g on the first day and you don't see them nursing latest by day 2 after 24 hours.
Please only use products recommended in our guide for looking after orphans or too small pup and only if the weight gain is noticeably less than their siblings'. Cow's milk is too rich for piggies.
The link to that very practical and precise guide is in the previous post as well as in our Mother and baby care information collection.

Thank you so much keeping very close eye so tired been since 6 am just want him/her to make itJust offering you and your cute baby support.
Thank you so muchWhat a little cutie!
Please be aware that he may not make it. Pups with issues are ever so fragile and can go downhill very quickly all of a sudden. You can only give 0.1 ml max at any time and best have him lick it but please make sure that he gets a chance to have some of his mother's first antibiotic laden milk so he has a bit more protection.
Fingers very firmly crossed. All you can do is to try and give him a chance as it seems that there is likely something more seriously wrong with him.
Thank you so much![]()
Iv been encouraging and placing him with mum to try drink, he tends to get smooshed if their all together trying to give him a chance with mum, he still struggles to get under so have been feeding him myself. Hes really alert and really sweet he is able to move his legs its as though he just doesnt know how to use them yet so hoping its a better outcome for himIf he is not drinking at all, you may have to feed as often as every 15 minutes in the first couple of days. Watch how often the other pups drink.
Thank you when i first had pig babies this was where i came i was alot younger than i am now and less experience with pigs after being given pigs as they wernt wanted. I now have many many of my own, I'm so greatfull this page exists as its really comforting, not everyone has the same love for animals as we all do xI can see you were in very safe hands with the advice on this thread. I just wanted to commend you for taking swift action when you noticed this little baby has had difficulties. It’s difficult to know initially whether it is a neurological problem or whether it is a positioning problem from in utero. This is something that only time will tell. It’s heartbreaking seeing a little piggy struggle, but we are here to support you..

Thank you, been doing this too shes not best pleased about it but its for the love of the babyGive him 2-3 one-on-one sessions with his mum each day so he has no competition - like we recommend in the various guides. If necessary, place her on your lap a little sideways so he can get better at the teats.
Ahh i understandWe cannot host video directly on the forum.
