Hello
I need some help - I think I know what I need to do but it's so upsetting 😪my 4 year old girl had a surprise for us yesterday- a wee piggie baby! Only had her a few weeks so total shock. I would love to keep her ( if it is a her) but mum lives with another piggie who is 5 and they like to sleep a lot! I have had an offer of a home for the baby- great friend, would have an amazing home and she has set everything up even though it will be weeks from now. I want the baby to have a good life and to play but I know my 2 girls are OAPs and I don't think it's fair on any of them (still crying typing this) my friend is going to get a friend for the piggie so it won't be alone. I'm also thinking if it is a boy how fair is it to put it through an anesthetic if not necessary. So sorry for the big post I just want help and to give baby a good life
Thank you x

I’m sorry you had that surprise. Just a few questions. Was she living with her current friend when you got her, or did you bring her to bond with the other piggy? Where did you get them from? She likely got pregnant wherever it was she lived before you brought her home.

If she came with her current friend, please double check the sex of the other piggy to be sure it’s a sow as well.

Have a read of the guides below on a nursing mum and baby etc.

There is no harm in keeping the baby with your pair. If it turns out to be a boy, he could live separately until he is old enough to be neutered. He can then wait 6 weeks and be re-introduced to the pair. If it’s a sow then she could just stay in with mum and the other piggy.

Piggies need company rather than a ‘play mate’. Being in the company of mum and her friend will be enough for them. If they want, they are free to zoom around the cage or jump around. Piggies don’t really ‘play’. Hopefully that can ease your mind a little when it comes to making a decision.

Good luck and I’m sure whatever you decide will be what’s right for every pig.

PS if it turns out to be a boar, he needs to be separated at 3 weeks or 250g, whichever comes first. He would need to be in a secure cage (near the other piggies) so he could still have the interaction through the bars. You’d have to make sure he can’t squeeze through and get back in with them.
