About 2 weeks ago I noticed vile smelling breath on one of my 4 month old sows, it's horrible and makes me want to hurl. She's very vocal and she squeaks when I hold her, so it was easy for me to notice the bad breath, I can only smell it when she talks, I can't smell it just by opening her mouth and smelling. At first it smelled like burnt hair, tonight it smells like sprouts (she had sprouts in her veggies tonight) so it seems that food is getting stuck somehow and maybe even rotting inside her mouth. She also seems to have a 'sore throat', when she squeaks her voice is very croaky and sometimes she loses her voice altogether, can Guinea Pigs get tonsillitis or something similar? I know dental abscesses can cause bad breath, but there are no lumps around her face or neck at all, she doesn't have a problem with eating, she's nice, big and chunky, and is the heaviest of my youngsters.

I'm stumped on this one. Any ideas?

Please have her seen a piggy savvy vet tomorrow. She can either have a problem in her mouth or throat, which can range from a blockage to an infection or problems with overgrowing teeth if she cannot chew properly. Smelly breath should be an alarm signal.

Monitor her weight daily at the same time and if necessary, step in with syringe feeding asap. Also make sure that she gets plenty of water, as much as she will take from a syringe (always about a third of it in guinea pigs of her age = ca. 1 mouthful). Complete Syringe Feeding Guide
