I live in Scampton village, famous for the Dambust
I thought I would take the guinea pig rescue poster in to my local P & H. I was feeling really positive and thought that I could ask them to put it up where the guinea pigs are.
I asked to see the manager who would not entertain the idea and was most abrupt and rude. She said they have their own rescue section in the shop.
I asked her which local rescue they supported and it was a dog rescue ?
I tried to say that it would not hurt to put the poster up to raise awareness to people to rescue instead of buy but I could see I was not getting anywhere :(
In fact I felt so deflated and gutted when I got outside the shop I cried my eyes out :'(
I got in my car and drove to our other P & H - we have 2 in Lincoln, I cried all the way and had to compose myself in the car before I got out.
Same response from that store manager although she was not rude to me - I think she could see how upset I was.
She said they weren't allowed to put our poster up ?
I did however pull myself together enough to show her Karens piggy PM poster and asked her for a donation for the tombola - and she gave me a £10 voucher.
I think she felt obliged though as I was so upset.
I still feel sad and angry, infact I'm crying now thinking about all the poor guinea pigs that are waiting in rescue to be homed.
I personally didn't think it was much to ask......
Has anybody else tried to take the poster to their P & H? If so how did you get on?
On a better note I took my rabbit Snoopy for her myxy vaccination today and my vet was delighted to put up the poster, she has piggies and most of the vetinary nurses have piggies to :) At least some people care.

Aww, it's a shame when they wont even put the poster up, not much to ask is it? Because the second one said they're not allowed, I wonder what the reason for that is? :(

Great news about the poster in the vets though O0

Welcome to a typical P@H response. They will not put up ANYTHING that could detract from their sales, including rescue notices. My local rescue had to be very careful about how they worded their advertisement in their local one and couldn't advertise that they had any for adoption.

Oh Hun at least you tried. I did think this you know. Pets at Home and other Pet stores want customers to BUY guinea pigs and don't want rescues taking custom away. They are thinking of the business.

I would try contacting some vets who will put posters up and maybe pet shops that don't sell animals.

Don't be too deflated, I would however contact P@H Head office to tell them how you were spoken to and ask for their support, you never know they may be all for it.

Hugs,

Louise

Well done for trying to spread the message of rescue. I know it's disheartening but don't let it put you off, perhaps try your local vet and non-animal selling pet they may be more sypathetic and inspire you :)

Graham spoke to Head Office P@H and they were positive with him. He will no doubt see this thread and comment.

I went to Dumfries P@H and they were fab and put up my (own) notice entitled Think Rescue - without a doubt and gave me free huge bags of food and 4 big hay packs too. They were very positive as were Carlisle.

They really all need to sing from the same song sheet.

Helen.

I have written a long list of local vets and I am going to spend tomorrow going round them all and put up posters, I don't want to give up on the piggies :)
I have however e-mailed customer services a P & H as I want to know why they won't support other rescues and I had a moan about the rude store manager >:D Thanks for your words of support, we must never give up on spreading the word of rescue to whoever and wherever we can :)

Awww at least you tried! Well done :) :) :)
I'm gonna take some posters when I go into our local p@h's and if they are rude to me, i'll be just as rude back :)
I might just take in 100 and accidently drop them all over the floor ;D Only joking! ;)

I havent printed one off yet as my printers not working :-\ then all i need to do after that is photocopy them :)

My whole thread has just got deleted too :( whats happening around here ? :-\

Hi DHS, I cannot see any deleted posts from you? Would you like to PM me and let me know what your post contained?
ILA - I understand a mod has been in touch with you about your thread.

I'm absolutely not surprised at P@h response - they have to make money somehow, and that's by selling guineas (and rabbits, gerbils, hamsters etc) not by recommending people rescue. If p@h did the sensible thing and no longer bred/sold animals, they could support rescues and wouldn't it be better

yes thanks ;)

iv not been in ours for a while but last time i was there they had a notice board that people could SELL animals on so cant understand not advertising a rescue.

The one near me had a for sale noticeboard but I did notice it was mainly dogs and cats - which P@H don't sell (thank goodness!).

Perhaps it's worth contacting head office to get a final answer?

Maybe I just pressed the wrong button?

My post just said that I think the manager at my P@H would react the same way, as he isnt the most friendly of people, and to Tattyruncy, don't let that response spoil your enthusiam for wanting to help the rescues!

Is there a poster that I can print off? Or should I contact my local rescue (if there is one) and maybe put some posters up for them?

DHS, I can't see why that would have been pulled, must have either been a glitch or 'user error'!
There is a poster here in the Rescue Section:

Thankyou!

It was probably just me. I press wrong buttons all the time. ::)

I know what you mean ::) They've installed some new whizzy system at work and I think IT hate me as they've messed it all up (well, they have as far as I'm concerned! ;D )
