A friend came to visit me and the piggies today. She brought a piggy toy (in the background) that the girls are scared of and Bo stumbles over (still at least he makes it jingle!) She also brought piggy treats... I was gonna say that they aren't allowed stuff like that but felt it was quite rude and realised that my own nutrition isn't always by the book (for breakfast I had chocolate and orange juice...) and ley them chew away at the thing for 30 seconds. They licked the crumbs off the fleece... I don't think I'll let them eat it again though, not when they are just as excited about oxbow pellets or curly kale for a treat.

It's insanely bright! Thankfully I haven't noticed them being hyper active from all the azo colorants :{

What do you do if someone gives our pigs gifts they shouldn't really have?

Same as you really - let then have anything unsuitable for a short time while I make alot of 'oooh and ahhh' noises and then take it away saying I'll let them have it again later.

It's difficult not to be rude to people who only mean kindness.

ahhhh dont be mean mummy let them have sweets :)) it is christmas :)) i think your friend is very kind wish i had friends who loved my animals

I find it best to be honest - "Oh, that was really kind but actually these kinds of treats are actually really bad for my piggies - thanks very much for the thought though!"

It's sweet that your friend bought presents for piggies - what a lovely gesture! My boyfriend has quickly learnt what the piggies can and can't have for treats, and will now often bring them around an apple or something instead of those sugar filled sticks!

It's better to be honest I feel, because the next time your friend wants to bring a present for the piggies she can bring them something you'll be comfortable letting them gobble down! Although I'm sure a stick like that as a one off won't do any harm.

Maybe you could ring her up saying "Hey, I looked up the treat you bought online/mentioned it to other GP crazies and I found out that it's not actually very good for them! But on the same note I found out that dried herbs/fruit/coriander etc etc is good for them, and apparently makes them go mad! I shal have to try it out" or something to that effect.

My mom always feeds my guinea pigs things they shouldn't have behind my back and now all except teddy love her more =(

Yeah, it was really sweet of her to bring pressies! So many people don't realise what pets mean to those who have them! I'm thinking what many of you are thinking, that a one off treat is not going to hurt them. (they only really tasted it, you can't see that they've been eating on it...).

Now that the piggies got their taste of it, do you think I can hang it out on the tree for the birds or is it bad for them too?

It's not very good for birds either...

But it is lovely for your friend to think of your piggies!

I would let them have a nibble while your friend is there, then whip it away quick. That coloured thing will probably make your pigs glow in the dark! ha ha xx

Well I checked this morning and their tips of their ears and toes had a faint green glow but they seem to back to normal now :p

I won't give them to the birds then, Wiebke. Bought some sunflower seeds instead today, it's really cold now, poor little birdies!
