I got a big problem with my outdoor piggies, I found a slug in their hutch last night, :'(
I scrubbed the hutch with disinfectant and cleaned their bowls. The hutch is on legs but with all the rain our garden is swamped with them, What can I do I feel terrible?
I do not have room in the house so they have to be outdoor pigs. If I put slug pellets around the hutch I would be too scared they could get passed to the pigs. Any ideas ?
?

When I used to keep my piggies outside I had the same problem. I found the best way to keep them out was to put salt around the hutch. It worked really well! I hate slugs too!! I once went out in the dark and as I went to open the hutch I put my hand straight onto a slug which was climbing up the hutch! I still shudder now when I think about it! :o :o :o

I've put salt all round ours too although the rain keeps washing it away!

A lot of, if not all, slug pellets are evil - they kill all sorts of wildlife. I'm sure that slugs won't harm your guineas. They come in the house sometimes when the back door is open! I know they're horrible but they pretty harmless.

i know i probably shouldn't but i put a couple of guinea pig pellets under the hutch, it stops them going in the hutch cause they just want the food, don't like killing them. defo keeps them out.

I think you are all right they probably are harmless, the pigs dont seem to notice them. I will try a bit of salt round the feet of the hutch when its dry and a few bits of guinea food. It really freaked me out I dont want to resort to use of slug repellents but everyone seems to think they are harmless so my mind is at rest. I bet they are in and out the hutch at night when its dark and I havent notice. I hope the weather improves and the girls can have some outside time blow out the cobwebs. 8)
Gosh glad other piggy mums had the same problem I thought I was some how neglecting my girls.

Roll on sunshine !

i have slugs rain or no rain, as i said i feed them then they stay out of the hutch.

Get a couple of Ducks ::)
There isnt a slug anywhere near our garden ;D

An old gardeners' trick is to put a coil of thin wire right around whatever you want them to stay away from. When they touch it they get a little electric shock that deters them. Does the same for snails too. O0

I am sick of all the slugs in my garden I use pellets and the slugs shivel up and die and do not get near the hutch ;D I started putting the pellets down after spotting a few trying to crawl in the hutch. They slugs do not stand a chance of getting near the hutch because of the pellets ;)
Hedgehogs are good at eating up all the snails and slugs in my garden. I think this year there is to many and they do not need them all. I know the hedgehos are still about due to the fact I stood in some hedgehog poo today and it stunk I was heaving ;D

I have some great pellets made of salt but now mine are in a shed I no longer have to worry. I know they dont harm piggies but if they stomp on them and squish them it gets all in their coats not good for long haired piggies :( I say zap the little blighters!

what does hedgehog poo look like ? :-\

i never even thought the piggies could swash them I was more worried about the pigs. haha Not sure what I thought the slugs would do.
checked on them again after dark and so far no slugs but there are bits of food on the floor, (because it was raining and the brush was in the shed) We all need some sunshine dry up the garden and give the pigs some garden time !

I use slug pellets around the shed and around the hutches mainly cos they give me the creeps cant stand the slimy horrible things yuck yuck :) :)

My Other half went out to feed the rabbit the other morning and there was a HUGE one sat in its food bowl :tickedoff: :tickedoff: :tickedoff:

I get loads of slugs too in the cage, usually in the bowl! I hate them!

This is interesting because we are having problems with slugs getting into one of our bunny's hutches. I was going to put salt down but OH said there was no point as it just hasn't stopped raining. I don't want to use pellets in case it hurts the bunnies, I was interested in what maisydaisy said about putting some food under the hutch, but we did once see rats on the bunny's hutch s don't want to do that either.. I washed George's bowls last weekend, they were covered in slug slime, it was like wallpaper paste and absolutely disgusting. I think the best thing is to try the salt now that the rain seems to be easing off.

I found a small slug in their food bowl too. I hope it wont cause any harm to them have scrubbed their bowls. Have put some pellets down around the legs of the hutch ( I know we shouldnt use them But I dont want my girls sharing a home with slugs!) I hope we have a bit of sunshine soon to dry up the garden. I just get a cold shudder when I think of them ekkkkk :o

This sounds the best idea... or getting ducks! I'd love a pond and ducks :smitten:

There are soo many slugs & snails around here too.

rachpark, hedgehog poo looks quite similar to cat's but a bit smaller
