I posted about this time last wheek when I noticed butters was itching a lot more than usuall, and the bald spots behind her ears were getting bigger. Now behind one of her ears, attached to her bald spot, is a different looking patch of skin, as well as the hair on her underside/belly region is thinning out, and there is a developing bald spot on her lower side. She has a vet appointment monday, but i'm panicking. What are your thoughts? I'm thinking mites? Or a skin fungus? But peanut, her cage mate, is 100% normal. Help!

Is it raw looking...?
Does it look like it's got White cream on it...?
I Personally have found fungal to be easier to treat than mites...
But I think it sounds like more like mites....
If anyone has mites my end I tend to ask for the ivermectin Jan rather than the spot on...
Good luck and I hope it goes well at the vets...
x

No, it's not raw and theres nothing odd other than her hair thinning out and having bald patches... The patch behind her ear stands out from the rest of her skin because it's leathery.

I'm hoping this is something easy to treat and isn't life threatening. :(( i'll keep you updated!

Sounds a bit like fungal, but the vet should be able to give you a diagnoses. Its not life threatening, piggies are prone to skin problems and usually (though admittedly not always) it is very easy to treat so dont panic.

Maybe mites, as one of our boar's had the exact same thing but also bald on his feet too. All you can do is wait to you go and see the vet:)

Soooo my Vet couldn't see anything specific on Butters but agreed it was a skin infection, so he gave both pigs a topical (one on peanut just to be safe) as well as oral antibiotics to fight the infection. poor baby. =[

And apparently, peanut is so heavy she's got a sore back... she's almost 3lbs! fat pig. rolleyes

Sooo pigs are now on a slight diet, and I'm buying a scale to make sure I start weighing them here at home... I don't think my bathroom scale would quite work... and hopefully Butter's skin calms down within two weeks. We'll see...
