I have just come back from the vets as woke up to find Barry struggling with his breathing this morning.
The vets prescribed him Baytril 0.5ml/day for 10 days. I'm so worried he isn't going to make it though.

Does anyone have any experience of this and any suggestions of what I should do? I have brought them both into the house and are in their run in the kitchen with lots of hidey holes and fleeces.

I hope he's going to be ok!

Barry is my piggy. Should I bring him into the kitchen as my buns are living in there at the moment...?

I have no advice or helpful tips, just wanted to send my get well vibes and love to Barry hope hes better soon! xxxxxx

duh sorry - dont know why I thought bunny rolleyes lol

From the other thread it sounded contagious (I think) so not sure you'd want them in same room as the buns but I have had no experience of this so I really dont know what I'm talking about rolleyes

Oh gosh i am so sorry i don't know of a piggie with Pasteurellosis :{

HUGE HUGS AND WHEEEEEEEEEEKY LOVES xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

not very helpful but I have treated pasteurella in the goat herd lots of times, usually it would affect the kids from mothers who were carriers. A course of antibiotics always did the trick and I never lost any through the pneumonia disease, but they would have a chesty noise for the rest of their life if it had been particularily bad. It is contageous to other species (a zoonosis) (and one of the reasons milk is pasturized). Cats can be a carrier BTW.

Hope barry gets better soon

Thank you everyone for your replies.

Sadly, Barry died late this afternoon - Alan is currently getting lots of cuddles and he is a bit quiet and withdrawn.

Do any of you guys have any experience about how to handle him? Alan was with him when he died and may be a bit traumatised.

ahh I am so sorry you lost Barry, run free little guy, hugs to you and Alan

Oh God am so so sorry. Sleep tight Barry. What a horrible shock for you. Hope Alan is ok.

Thanks everyone, I think I'm a little in shock as just feel numb...I seem to have lost all of my emotion! :( I was upset at the vets this morning but now I just feel numb :{

awwww i have just caught up with this, i am so sorry how very shocking and sad for you.

Rip Barry, sweet dreams little one x

Hope you are ok x

I'm so very sorry to hear that Barry has gone to The Bridge 8...

I hate to cause you any more problems/grief.... but I notice you have also started considering getting Alan another friend....but you state that Barry died of pasteurella.

Did the vets actually take a culture and confirm it was pasteurella? (as there are many bugs that cause similar symptoms in piggies)

If it has indeed been diganosed as pasteurella...from a microbiological cutlure...then you need to know that this bug can be carried by both rabbits and piggies that have come into contact with an infected animal...and that the carriers may not show symptoms but can infect new animals and ultimately cause their demise.

I went into a P@H recently and blasted the manager for keeping a bunny in adoption that had known pasteurella yet also kept two "healthy" piggies for adoption living directly above said bun in open cages...(pasteurella is transmitted by aerosol...i.e. tiny water droplets from sneezing/breathing carried in the air )

I know you are still getting over the shock of Barry's death..so can i suggest we have a chat sometime (when you feel able) to ensure that your proposed plans for Alan are not going to put him (or any new friends) at risk?

I also think you need to contact your vet quite urgently about putting Alan on antibioitics in view of his close contact with Barry

PM me for my phone number when you are ready.

Hugs....

Oh thank you so much Pebble. Really kind of you to offer to help me! :)

To be honest when I went to the vet's she prescribed the baytril and said guineapigs are prone to Pasteurella and URI's and thats possibly what it was. His symptoms were rattly chest and irregular breathing/racy heart and gasping. He was never diagnosed with it.

When I first got them they lived in the house with the buns although housed separately. I have sinced read that buns are carriers and gunieas pick pasturella up easily from them. They did actually live with a bunny before I got them.

Do you think it was a URI?

Oh Amber I'm very sorry to hear about poor Barry.
Did you go to Linden Vets?
Pasteurella obviously effects the respiratory tract so it could of well been.

Sleep tight barry xx

Only just caught up with this thread, I am so sorry you've lost your boy.
RIP Barry
