What age should I start bathing guinea pigs ?
and how often?
My 2 are about 14 weeks and although I can't smell them when I walk into the room, when I cuddle them I have noticed there starting to pong! Someone said they do wet wipes for guinea pigs which may be ok for a quick wash? What would you recommend ?

Thanks :)

Guinea pigs usually don't have to be washed. Only if they're
They can even get a cold if you bath them.

They should smell like hay normally.

I usually bath my two girls every 3-6months depending on how they smell.

Oreo has long hair so I tend to space out her baths more than Bugs. Bugs is a shorthaired and if she isnt bathed every three months she gets a small amount of dandruff. I use a special no tear pet shampoo that has a baby powder smell to it.

Sorry, I haven't finished the sentence. I ment they only have to be bath when they're extremely dirty - but usually they clean themselves several times a day - and they don't smell ugly. I've never bath any pig of mine and their coat shines and looks trimly and they only smell like hay.

It is unusual for guinea pigs to smell. Maybe it is their bedding that smells. This means you need to change it more often. How often are you changing it and which bedding are you using?

. Its not the bedding , I use fleece and wash every 2 to 3 days as I'm bit of a neat freak! Maybe its just there smell, lol !

I believe the advice is not to bathe them until they are 12weeks old unless they have a skin problem and they can be bathed every 4 to 6wks after that. Personally I think a bath every 4-6wks is a little too often but thats just me :)

My two boys are nine months and have very thick, long curly hair so although they get a haircut when needed they do need the odd bum wash now and then.

I try not to bath them unless they really need it. I bath them when their sweat glands are looking mucky/greasy or if the fur round their bottoms and legs is mucky either from running round outside or if they decide to sit in their own pee - something they seem to delight in :{

Mostly I just wash their bottoms but if their fur is greasy or just mucky then they have a proper bath rather than a dip :))

I think my boys have had about two bum washes and one proper bath and they have lovely fur and have not had any skin problems

Guinea pigs, like most animals do have a natural smell but I don't think its a nasty smell, they just smell like...well, Guinea Pigs!

My girls are almost 2 years old and have only been bathed once, it really isn't neccessary to bath often. Long haired pigs might need bathing slightly more often though.

I always used to bath mine every 6-8 weeks with Flea or Die shampoo, as a preventative against hay mites. This was recommended to me by the CCT & my piggies always smelt very nice :) It's personal preference really, it does no harm to wash them as long as you don't use anything too harsh on them. Have a look at the Gorgeous Guineas website as they do shampoos for every occasion rolleyes
