In a previous post I put how I think that my Liza may have mites and was given ivermectin orally by someone who raises guinea pigs. She said that it would take a couple of doses before I saw improvement and I am going to bring her back to treat her again. In the meantime, what is the best way to give her a bath? The lady gave me a shampoo for her to soothe her. How fast am I going to see improvement? I think she is missing a tiny bit more of her fur. How do I bathe Liza?

What exactly was this shampoo? If a pig has mites I would be using ivermectin from a vet, not someone who raises guinea pigs (a breeder?). I especially wouldn't trust this person if she was the one who told you male guinea pigs are sexually mature at 6 weeks!

Thanks, I need to find a new vet as they are not open that much and the vet told me to take Al out at 6 weeks. I had a really good vet when I had my cat, but I had to give him away and he does not see piggies unless you have another animal, like a cat or dog. :embarassed:

Hi

If your Guinea pig has mites have a look at the gorgeousguineas.com website. They offer an excellent range of shampoos, creams and lotions for the various skin conditions and mite / fungal problems. All five of my rescue GPs are currently being treated with shampoos and lotions although its a long process of recovery they are gradually improving, without filling their little bodies full of drugs.

r u suppost to bathe them? Ihave short haired redhead hes red all over its really cool do u only bathe longhairs?

I have bathed all of ours. Most of them enjoy it, especially if they have dry skin.

I bathed my two sows last night using Gorgeousguineas Manuka & Neem Shampoo. Both girls have horrid dry skin conditions but look like new guineas this morning. I'm so happy for them this morning as at last their problems are clearing. Would recommed GG products everytime!

can you bath them if you have no pig shampoo. I ask as i will be getting some but might pick a new one up tomorrow & recall reading it was good way to intro pigs doing all together as they are all in fear & neutral environment so likely to bond easier?

I wont bath my pigs with anything other than gorgoeus guineas shampoos-it is not worth the risk.
I know of someone who used a dog shampoo and the guinea died an agonising death. Dont forget, these animals have such sensitive skins.

Si, I wouldnt say it is necessary to bath your newcomer, just introduce in a neutral space. Some people rub some of the other guineas bedding on the newcomer. Peter Gurney used to use lavender oil on their rumps-personally, I have never done anything other than ensure the space is neutral as is anything I put in it (eg cardboard boxes)
