bathing my babies

is it ok to bath guinea pigs,, some sites say no but mine are a bit wiffy and wondered if it would be ok to bath them before i clean their cages out

and what do you use shampoo wise,, do you buy guinea pig shampoo
 
Hi Col,

Some people do and some people don't. Personally I give my GPs a bath every 6-8 weeks (especially the long haired ones). I use shampoos from www.gorgeousguineas.com they are great and all natural.

Its fine to bathe them - ideally you should use shampoo from Gorgeous Guineas:

It smells heavenly and will not irritate their precious skin.

Bathing is easy, some gps love it. Make sure that you test the water temperature using your elbow (make sure it is lightly warmed) and never put water on or around the head, face or ears)
 
i bath mine fairly often :) gorgeous guineas stuff smells heavenly, is really good and it's natural and good for piggies skin.

what i do is run some nicely warm, not hot water and put a load of it in a bowl.
then i get someone else to hold the piggie carefully over an empty bowl and speak softly and reassuringly to them.
(i find that they prefer this to being put in a bowl, they try and climb out and think you're drowning them, and get scared, it's much more reassuring this way)
then what i do is use a cup, and fill it with the warm water from the big bowl, and carefully pour it all over them, avoiding, ears and face.
then, when they are fairly wet (you may need to do that a few times) gently rub a small amount of shampoo into a lather and massage, get clean etc.
then using the cup method pour over warm water, until alll the shampoo has gone.

Gorgeous guineas shampoo comes with instructions anyway.
i find they like being held the whole time much more than not. :)
 
I use Johnsons Baby Shampoo to bath mine, which is rare.

My mum once bathed one of mine in my E45 bath oil-she looked like she had been bathed in the chip pan :o
 
it's up to everyone themselves, and i'm not trying to be horrid, but i think somewhere i heard that that can dry out their skin? ? don't know. hehe awww she was all greasy! ;D ;D ;D ;D thats what my hair looked like when i used body lotion to wash my hair with instead of shampoo! ;D ;D ;D (by accident :~D)
 
I've heard baby shampoo shouldn't be used because it dries out the skin.

I use gorgeous guineas shampoo and only bath them when they need it really - mine don't enjoy it so I don't do it if they don't need to be done. Besides, gorgeous guineas shampoo is not expensive at all and it's worth it to know it's safe :)

Col, depending on their age, Honkey is 7 weeks old and so I can not bath him yet, even though he is green underneath from laying on cabbage and his chin is green and he smells.
 
Riffy is the only one of mine to love his baths.

Hey, Lucinda, we bath our piggies in the same washing up bowl.
Whilst Riffy is being very good my two dived over the side, bathing me in the process. ;D ;D ;D
 
They are about 5 - 6 months now,, pretty big and pretty smelly lol,, someone said they are going through puberty (kindof,, similar) and thats why they are smelling now,, prob thats why they are fighting and needed seperating too ::)
 
oh ;D thats fiine to bath them then, i think, it's just under 12 weeks that your not supposed too O0 well unless they have a skin prob, but then you use mini pig shampoo or in my case my little baby has some special stuff from the vet :)
 
Just done my two with their second shampooing of lice n easy.
Not quite so traumatic as the first time. I think we were more confident.
Having another pair of hands to help is definately better.
