Hi there!
So about 6 months ago my piggie Willow had some kind of fungal/ dry skin issue, we took her to the vets and left with some medicated shampoo to use once every 3 days. That worked a treat and we only needed 4 baths before it was all cleared up. However bath time was a nightmare and I ended up washing her in my swimming costume and a thick jumper, because she would just leap straight into my arms and bite at my elbow in frustration. I ended up having to wash her in my arms as she would not stay in the bowl at all. I did put a towel down, and made it very shallow.

Today I noticed the same dry flakes shedding off her coat, so I think whatever it was may have come back. I'm thinking I need to bath her again as we still have the shampoo from last time. Does anyone have any tips? I'm terrified of bathing her because I hate seeing her stressed out and causing upset! Any advice would be much appreciated.

Many Thanks!

Sorry one last question. Can guinea pigs just get dry skin from being kept inside in the winter with the heating on? Both piggies are kept in my bedroom at the moment. Can the air be too dry for them? I dont want to bath her unessasarly either if it is just a bit of dry skin, as I dont see any bald patches like last time. Thanks 😊

Hi!

I am very sorry for the return. You need to practise very strict hygiene in several respects since invisible ringworm spores can stay live for around two years to cause repeated outbreaks. Please take the time to read our ringworm guide carefully and follow the very detailed advice in there. In 15 years of existence and with literally thousands of piggies passing through, we have had time to find out all the ways ringworm can be transmitted and how to address them. The guide advice does really work to get rid of it once and for all.

Here is our comprehensive ringworm guide (including a chapter on humans and ringworm, as it is the single most species jumping issue with pets) as well as our step-by-step safe bathing guide.
Ringworm: Hygiene And Pictures
Bathing (including cleaning grease glands)

All the best!

Thanks for your advise! We had her tested for ringworm last time as we had a sample sent off for testing, and it came back not as ringworm. I'm almost 100% sure it's the same thing as last time in which case it wont be ringworm. I'll follow that guide anyways though as I dont want whatever this is to come back again! Thank you 😊
