How often should I be bathing my Gp's?

I was thinking once every few months as they don't really get dirty but what is best as don't wanna do them to mch as they have sensitive skin which could dry up!

Also are you not suppose to bath pregnant sow's?

Hello

I think there have been several threads on here about bathing recently, have a try with the 'search' box and see what it brings up! :)

Pregnant sows should not be bathed because of the stress.

Opinion seems to vary on this - I've got long hairs so they do get regular baths, but not too frequent - every few months I guess. And I tend to avoid it in winter because they are shed pigs and so they have to be really really 100% dry before they go back in the shed so they don't catch a chill. Some of my short haired pigs haven't ever had a bath (yet!) :)

Gorgeous Guineas site is great - sells lots of different natural shampoos and also advice on how to use them. Good luck!

Yes, would definately recommend Gorgeous Guineas :) I bought some insecticidal shampoo before I knew about GG and used it once, it's full of chemicals. As Sophie says, opinions vary. I bathe mine every couple of months, they are all indoor pigs so I don't have the worry of putting them outside a bit damp. Shampoos containing essential oils should not be used on pregnant pigs, and very young pigs should only have a very mild shampoo used if you really feel you need to. If you are concerned I would definately email Chrissie at Gorgeous Guineas, she has some really good advice :)

GG do a great 'Mini Pig' shampoo specially for the youngsters - they also sell trial sizes so you can see what's best for your pig.

Some of them actually seem to enjoy the bath - but most aren't too keen, I've found. Several pairs of hands may be needed! But you should see the filth that comes off of them! I'm going to Spring clean all of mine as soon as the weather turns milder :)

yeah, gorgeous guineas are really great! O0 here's a link to their website http://www.gorgeousguineas.com/index.html
i bath every few months really, i wouldn't do it unless necessary, like if they're dirty or smelly or something ;)
they need to be completely dry before going outside or even back in their cage O0

I dont like bathing my pigs as they hate it and get very stressed but sometimes you have to like when they have skin problems as one of mine has at the moment so i bathed her last night she hates it other than that i dont bath them :smitten: :smitten:

Ok thanks for all the advice, didn't realise there hae been a lot of posts on this as new here. :)
I have just ordered some lice and easy from Pampered piggies which looks good will try GG next time.
Think I will leave it awhile longer yet then and do it as the weather starts to warm up xx O0

I think Lice n Easy is made by Gorgeous Guineas anyway! I got some of that too, and Posh n Go for my long haired girls! Just waiting for the weather to warm up a bit

Good luck with bathing your pigs - send us before and after photos!

Sophie

yeah lice n easy is made by GG but pampered piggies sell it! O0 yeah if possible wait for the weather to warm up, but do they have lice then? if so i'd do it as soon as possible and just make sure they re completely bone dry and nice and warm after O0
lice can get nasty if left, so if it is that i would do it asap! my mimi had lice when i got her, she had been neglected and she was riddled and flinched whenever you touched her and she was squealing and flinching even if you didn't! :'( she's fine now O0

both our piggies are short hair zoe 3.6 and jessie 1.6 years old and they have never had a bath. if they have a dirty bottom i use baby wipes. as for being smelly my piggies smell like piggies. i think everyone knows my thought on bathing piggies it is too stressful and totally unnescressary. but each to their own. hugs and cuddles to you and your fur babies. :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

I've got a piggy who had symptoms resembling a fungal infection so I emailed Chrissie at GG. After one shampoo there are NO visible flakes, it's amazing. I don't bath my short haired piggies routinely in winter (even though they live in the house) unless they have something like lice that needs it but they all get a bath every 6-8 weeks when the weather is warmer.

That Coconeem melt is fantastic, Blaze used to scratch a lot and didn't stop but really cut down after that.

We had to wash Pepe and Leo this weekend as I had put in a grass house and noticesd it had started to pong - they'd only just wee'd over the entrance holes hadn't they, I just watched them do it, stuck their bottoms outside and wee'd right over it! I wasn't impressed, no wonder they had got so smelly ::) Pepe HATES getting a wash but seems to get the smelliest as he's always bottom dragging with Leo, and they discovered how to duck under the vetbed which obviously has pee on it... boys!

I haven't bathed any of my pigs except Bella once when she got piggy wee all over her (don't ask). They don't smell and don't have any skin problems.

I'm not saying it's wrong to bath them, just that nothing awful happens if you don't!

I bathe mine every couple of months but they're not in for long and I keep a hold of them underneath the whole time as I don't think they like it very much. Might start doing it every 6 months instead.
