Hi
My two piggies were given baytril through a syringe last week and this week the vet has told me to put it in their water. I give them both probiotics on their vegetables. Why do you have to wait to give probiotics after baytril and should I just remove the baytril bottle until an hour after they have had their veg?
Thanks you

Hi!

PLEASE syringe the baytril, preferably twice daily. Baytril is about as foul tasting as you can get, and no piggy will drink it voluntarily, I can assure you! Not that you can control the individual intake just sticking baytril into water! Never medicate guinea pigs through their drinking bottle. It is totally ineffective.

Probiotics help steady the guts and gut flora that is being killed off by antibiotics. Baytril is especially harsh on the guts. Please weigh any guinea pigs that are not well daily at the same time in the feeding cycle instead of weekly.

Could you please add your country to your details (Click on your name on the top bar, go to personal details location). Could you also please tell us what your piggies are being treated for, their weight and the dose and if possible concentration of baytril (should be on the label).

I can't believe that the vet has told you to do this! As Wiebke says, there is no control over dose and it tastes foul! Please use a syringe. Baytril is an antibiotic, which kills of the good bacteria in the gut as well as the bad bacteria causing the illness. Piggies are particularly sensitive and so the probiotics help to re-stock the good bacteria. You wait to give the probiotic because it won't be able to work while there's still a dose of antibiotic in the system. Best to wait a couple of hours.
