I know there are people with really sick piggies on asking questions, so I apologise in advance for asking yet another question.

I posted a few days ago saying how Diego was crackling when breathing and sneezing loads. We went to the vet yesterday and got Baytril for him, and I have to give him 0.8 of the syringe once per day. I done this for the first time yesterday, and then again this morning (although there only seems to be enough in the bottle of half a does tomorrow and thats it - is that right? I would have thought the course should be longer?). His eye is gunky this morning and he had a really bad body shaking sneeze - worse than before the vet, is this normal for them to get worse before they get better?

Thanks in advance x

Please dont apologise for posting about this - URI is very serious in piggies and can go down hill very fast if not diagnoised correctly and early.

Did the vet say how long to give the baytril for?

I always carry on the baytril longer than symptoms have past to make sure the infection has been dealt with.
Also my vet told me to give twice a day ie 0.4mls twice a day - my last foster pig with URI was only small so had a lower dose but for almost 2 weeks.

Please contact your vet today and check the dosage and amount he gave you were correct and pick up more anitbiotics if you dont have enough.

Also I would stongly advice that you give him daily probiotic as baytril is very harsh on the digestion. And up Veggies high in Vit C too.

Thanks for replying :) I was literally refreshing and refreshing like someone help me please!

It was my first time at the vet ever and iI'd been up all night with him so I wasnt really thinking straight and didn't think to ask how long to give it for. She did say one 0.8 per day, but I could split it into 0.4 twice a day if I wanted, but he hates it so much that I've been doing it all in the morning.

Three days doesn't seem enough does it?

Sorry for sounding stupid, but what do you mean daily probiotic?

x

Agree with the above, its usually two doses a day at 0.4 ml (depending on the piggy) and for at least 2 weeks usually......

Definitely use probiotics as its quite hard on the gut.

Mine also hates Baytril with a passion, it must taste awful (although she hates Septrin too which smells delicious to me!). Some people recommend mixing it Ribena and I am going to try this tonight....that may help?

Good luck and healing vibes! x

No 3 days isnt enough I would go to your vets today and check the dosage again.

I use this to help with the gut - but your vet should be able to give you something too

I am looking into the probiotics now :)

He wont even come near me now after giving him the baytril :( and he's usually following me all around! I did put some Ribena in and it didnt make any difference, he was still looking at me like 'Put that near me again and i will kill you'.

Good luck and healing vibes to your piggies too, hopefully the Ribena works beter than it did for me! x

p.s how long have you to give baytril for? is it longer than three days?

All piggies are different and your vet should answer your questions but on an average 2 weeks are the norm.

Also your piggie will love ypu again, I have found that the poorly piggies that I have had to pick up and medicate become the most loving

I just spoke to the vet - going back up there to get more medicine, apparently it must have been a mistake that I wasn't given more :)

Thanks salt n peppers mum - I was scared he'd fall out with me forever! xx

Hi, i think i posted on your last thread. I'm in same situation and haven't got much response :/ so looking through as many other posts as possible. You could try smearing the baytril on a piece of his fav treat. It didnt work with Sherbert (my URI pig) but my sister does that when ever her pet rats have baytril and its always worked for her. I'm also spoiling Sherbs at the moment, lots of her fav veg straight after her baytril and plenty of cuddles so she forgives me. Everytime I go to pick her up though she knows what's coming and scrabbles a lot, got some nasty scratches on my hands :/
Sherberts on 0.2 ml of baytril twice a day for 10 days so i'd deff check back with vets to get more baytril and see how long he needs it for. My vet also told me if it didnt start working within 5 days or she got noticably worse to bring her back in.
Hope this helps and keeping my fingers crossed for Diego.

P.S. Thanks for that link for probiotic, salt and peppers mum, i've been searching everywhere for some and havent had any luck. Will deff be getting that for Sherbert.

we're in the same boat with humphrey only he is refusing to eat his pig pellets so we are syringing CC and pellet mush into him aswell as baytril

Ah they are'nt stupid! I get that same 'look' ....'try putting that thing near me once more and I will never wheek to you ever again'.

You feel mean for doing it. I find that if I stand higher than her, make my hands a little damp so they don't slip on the hair, and then pull the lower lip and jaw down its all over in a split second. Then give them a treat and they soon forget! I have found that now she knows who is boss and its not an 'optional extra' that she has become more compliant with time though.

She does knows the sound of the medicine box now though and as soon as she hears it she's off! I have to catch her first before the box comes out! LOL Not stupid are they!?! :))

Healing vibes to you all. x

lol thank you - that made me smile knowing its not just me!

I never thought of making my hands damp as he does slip away from me so will def try that tomorrow. His little front feet are just so bloody fast, digging away from me!

They are certainly not stupid, I def agree with that! thanks for your help x

I hope your little humphrey gets better soon, ive mixed ready grass around his pellet bowl so that has kept him eating those maybe you could try that?

thinking of you guys and hope he's better soon x

Thanks for the tip, if he still struggles with me I will try the veg idea :)

How is sherbert, is she getting any better? Diego always lets me pick him up but now is running all the time. Ive been spoiling him too, and at night lying down on the bed and letting him sleep on me for an hour or so to get his trust back up :(

Sending love to you and sherbert x

Your welcome, hope it works. When i tried it with Sherbs she chewed it up then spat it out on to my leg rolleyes so you might want to wear something you dont mid getting chewed up food on :p
Sherbert isn't much better :( but she isnt any worse which i suppose is better than nothing. Still very worried about her though. I hope she doesnt have to go back to the vets cos she's so scared there, when the vet listened to her chest she was panicing and desperately trying to climb up my coat to get away from the vet. :(
I hope you get Diegos trust back, I wish we could tell them we're only doing this to make them better.

Thank you. Love and healing vibes sent to you and Diego. Sherbert sends healing piggy kisses to Diego too xoxo

It is really worrying isnt it? Its hard because they cant tell us what to do or how to make them feel better :( Diego is sleeping loads, just chilling with me in the living room but he seems pretty much the same as yesterday. I'm just hoping it clears up asap, for him and Sherbert.

Diego was fine at the vet surprisingly, she was very kind to me and let me take him out and relax him before she started trying to look at him. Let me know how you guys are getting along, i'll be thinking of you so keep me updated xxxxx

Its really worrying me, the vet didnt seem to sure about it being a URI he just said thats most likely and easiest to treat so if she doesnt improve i dont know what it could be. :( Sherbs has been sleeping more too, but its hard to tell whether its from illness or behaviour changes due to getting a new pig. I'm still heartbroken by the death of my piggy Pumpkin who died earlier this year so I cant bear the thought of anything happening to Sherbert too. :( I did catch her having a little popcorn last night though and she's been chuckling lots during our cuddle time so she seems happy at least.
I'll keep you updated with how she gets on and share any tips I pick up and I'll be checking this thread for any news on Diego. I'll be thinking of you both x

My vet said a similar thing, but she did say that the baytril would be the best thing to clear the crackle in his breathing. I've just had a cuddle and his breathing does sound loads better, still 'clicking' but nowhere near as bad.

Ive bundled lots of different fleeces all over my living room with tunnels, boxes to hide in and loooaaddds of food. He's sleeping most of the time but every now and again he's doing a running lap around, popcorning and then snuggling back down in a fleece :)

I'm so sorry about your little pumpkin, it must be even harder for you that Sherbert is sick after that. But you are doing all the right things as far as I'm concerned so she should start to show some improvement and if I think of anything else we could be doing i'll let you know asap :)

Hope you are both feeling better x

I'm glad his breathing is improving, i hope he continues to improve. I've barely heard Sherbert sneeze either last night or this morning. :) Her breathing is still heavy though.
Awww bless him. I've put a microwaveable heat pack in Sherberts fav place to sit in the cage and she leave it only to eat or to boss the other two around. :))
Thank you, nice to have some reassurance that I am doing it right. :)
Hope Diego continues to improve x

So glad Sherbert is sneezing less, thats got to be a good sign! And the fact she's still bossing the others around is fantastic, she must be feeling a bit better if she can grump at the others :))

I found a great way of giving Diego his medicine this morning, no struggles, no falling out with me, just good old medicine taking....and bribery! I got the end of the cucumber, the narrowest part and used the end of a tea spoon to hollow out the middle so it was wide enough for the syringe to fit through. I filled the syringe up with the medicine and the Ribena, and slotted it inside the cucumber. Then I got some big sprigs of mint and slotted them through the cucumber too, leaves at the same end and the part of the syringe that was to go in Diegos mouth. Sat him on my lap facing me, and held the cucumber up so he had to raise his head. When he was eating the mint leaves the syringe was right by his mouth so when he stopped chewing (make sure they stop chewing or it could hurt him/make him choke) and went for the next leave I pushed the plunger and there we have it, medicine in his mouth! He just looked confused a bit, then carried on eating the mint :) he;s not sat by me eating cucumber. Hope this helps someone else! x

:)) That is the most genius way of getting a piggie to take medicine! I hope Diego feels better soon

Awww so glad you've got him happily taking his meds :<> and i must agree with sport billy, most genius way of getting a guinea pig to take their meds

Thanks guys - hopefully it works with other little piggers too :) I was like a mad scientist in the kitchen this morning lol!

I just couldnt stand him hating me all day again. Now he's mad at cucumbers not me!

x

How's Diego doing? Sherbert is very nearly fully recovered. There's very little sneezing and her chest is sounding normal. :<>
Really hope Diegos doing just as well. x
