Can anyone tell me where the reference is that the correct dose of 2.5% Oral Baytril is 0.4ml.

Just looked in Vedra's book (Diagnostic Guide) and it states ' Baytril 2.5% injection - 0.4ml once or twice daily, Baytril 2.5% oral solution 0.5ml once or twice daily according to problem'.

Yes, I have read that, however, I have also read a pharmacy book which recommends 0.1ml and yet another professional book which states 0.2ml twice daily.

So, there are recommendations for 0.1ml ; 0.2ml ; 0.5ml all by mouth twice daily, all of the same form of Baytril.

Hi we have just come off a course of baytril with our one piggie and as he is young and still quite small we were giving him as per vet instruction 0.1ml twice daily, but if it were an adult piggie i think it increases i suppose it depends on weight more than anything

i've only had bayrtil for a piggie once, but i know fthatw hen we have bunsters on it (which we have had a few in our time) their dosage has depended upon their weight, perhaps this is why there is varying amounts in the books?

I am interested to know why I, and many other owners, have the 0.4ml dose so firmly fixed as the correct dose. I am trying to find out where this "correct" dose comes from.
On a weight basis it seems to be 0.1ml per kg. body weight of 2.5% Oral Baytril twice daily. Considering that most pigs are between 1kg to 1.5kg ie approximately 2lb 2oz. to 3lb 2oz. then 0.4ml would seem to be a rather high dose.
Why is 0.4ml so commonly stated as the standard dose?

Perhaps someone, somewhere, felt that the maximum dose was preferable in order to maximise the effect (i.e. wipe out an infection more rapidly than would be done with a lower dose)?

Maybe "up to 0.4ml twice daily" would be the most accurate information!

I did find on the Baytril website that the dose for guinea pigs is 2.5-5mg twice daily - 0.1ml to 0.2ml.

So many people say that Baytrill is "harsh" on the gut. Maybe if the Baytril dose were reduced from 0.4ml to 0.2ml the side-effects would be reduced and there would be no/reduced need for a probiotic?

I would agree. With Baytril being a wide-spectrum antibiotic, I wonder if "less is more", so to speak.

I have always given 0.2mls twice daily to my pigs on the advice of my vet and sadly have still experienced the nasty gastro-related side effects so still give a probiotic as it seems to really knock the pigs' apetite. :(

When my GF's pig was sick last year, vet prescribed 0.2ml baytril x twice daily. After 6 days, pig was getting worse. Upon advice from a rodentologist and checking it was ok with the vet, 0.4mls was given x 2 daily for a further 3 weeks. Visible results on higher dose within 3 days. Pig was quite young, weighed just over 1 kg I believe.

Like humans, we are prescibed antibiotic type/dosage dependant upon severity/type of infection. Same for cavies no?
