Hi there, I've recently rescued my first skinny pig. He was severely under weight from being fed only fruit & being kept in bad conditions (a really tiny cage on top on dirt, which was full of mold! :-O)

Not to worry though, since he's been with me he now has a huge house (well, its a custom built castle actually - Nothing but the best for my prince! ;-D) & now he's eating properly he's steadily gaining weight. I took him in for a check up at the vets, who said that (aside from the lack of weight, which was giving him a very arched back) he was surprisingly good considering the conditions he was in. Everyday i can see an improvement in his health & happiness!

The vet never mentioned anything about using an anti-parasite treatment, but the guy in the pet shop (who also keeps Skinny pigs) said that i should treat him just in case. He sold me some 'Beaphar anti-parasite spot on' treatment, but i just wanted to check that this was safe to use on Skinny's as it only says guinea pig on the box. He is of the right weight to use this particular treatment, but just wanted to make sure! :-)

He's not uncontrollably scratching or anything, but i just want to use it just in case. I want to make sure he is as comfortable, healthy & happy as he possibly can be! :-)

Thanks in advance for any advice! =D

I would not use this on a skinny pig. I will post more when I finish work at 5 but just wanted to say a quick no now. Will explain more later.

@helen105281 is a skinny pig owner herself.

We generally do not recommend to use low dosed beaphar, as that won;t cure anything but can make things worse. It may be good if you had your skinny checked by a competent vet and if necessary treated with good quality and appropriate products.

He has been to the vets, who said he had good skin & mentioned nothing about any treatments needed. It was only because the guy at the vets said i should use it just in case (considering the conditions he was in previously)

I wasn't too sure about it & always like to do my research before hand. I defo wont use this then! Thanks so much guys, i really appreciate it! :-)

@helen105281 will be able to give you specific information as to how to deal with skin care, but I would think that a medicated mild bath would do the trick.

If he is showing no signs of any skin issue I would not give anything as their skin is so sensitive. If he was to get mange mites I would ask the vet about injections of Ivermectin instead as they are more effective and less likely to cause a reaction. If he gets fungal, I have used Imaverol dips on my skinnies after patch testing behind the ear for 48 hours. If their skin is a bit dry I use this spray:

Humilac Spray 250mls - £9.38

My Phoebe in my avatar had incredibly sensitive skin, more so than most skinnies so I was very careful about what I put on her. I was lucky enough to attend a piggy clinic at a vets where oral Ivermectin was given as a preventative when she was alive. These clinics have now stopped due to ill-health so in the future I will ask my local vets about oral Ivermectin or even a one-off injection if needed as a preventative for my 3 current skinnies.

It's great that you have taken him in, let me know if you need any further information. Could you update your location on your profile too as it will affect the availability of products etc.
