Hey I'm new here, i don't know if theres any threads on this anyway sorryyy :P

so i have a 9 week old guinea pig and have realized that she has been itching alot, so i picked up some beaphar Guinea pig anti parasite spot on, i gave her the correct amount which for her was 1 pipette, i done this on Monday, shes still itching slightly..
the thing i don't understand is that on the package it says treatment for up to 4 weeks, see the thing is mite eggs hatch within 7-10 days...
so i do do another pipette in 7-10 days or do i actually wait 4 weeks?
also does the 4 weeks mean for prevention or is that for guinea pigs with active mites?
its really confusing so I'm not sure..
I will be taking her to the vet if it gets any worse but i want to see if I'm able to treat her myself, she is new as i got her on Saturday. She will be joining my other guinea pig once she is out of quarantine..
any help on this will be really good
thanks :).

Hello!

I tired this with my pigs when they started scratching and I'd say just to go to the vets as it did nothing for them :/ I even called my vet and they said it basically doesn't work. So I just took them to the vet and it cleared up pretty quickly. I initially thought it was mites, until my pigs starting to lose hair around their face and found it was actually ringworm. So you might want to just take your piggy to the vet in case it's the beginning of ringworm? But if she is only scratching slightly, and if it seems to be getting better maybe call up your vet and see what they advise on the dose? As I never carried mine through that long because it got worse so quick. Hope all goes well though!

Hi! shop products are geared towards the prevention, but not the treatment of mites; they are too low dosed for that. Please have your little girl seen by a vet and treated appropriately. Do not home treat, as that can easily make things worse! We have got a list of piggy savvy UK vets on our top bar.

Mange mites need an interval course of treatment because mange mites lay their eggs in the skin, which becomes very painful and inflamed. The first two courses will hopefully clear out the existing mites, the later courses will catch any emerging eggs at the ideal time. http://www.guinealynx.info/mites.html

Hello and welcome.

I too agree that shop brought products do not work and can course more harm than good.

Not a guinea pig but we used shop brought products for one of our cats who had a flea problem. Needless to say it didn't work and he became infested as did our house!

It is always best to have the proper and safest stuff prescribed by a vet.

recently shes stopped itching and i have only seen her itch on the odd occasion now, its only been about 5 days so I'm going to keep an eye on her, hopefully its gone, if not i will take a trip to the vets next week! :D thank you everyone :)
