Ben is bleeding from his mouth-help!

He is fine now thanks. I just keep checking his mouth to make sure it's staying free from any signs of badness! He did scare me the other night though - he's normally 3lb of wriggly pig and he was just sitting there, let me pick him up straightaway, without all the normal chasing around his pen! His breathing was erratic for a time too, which I took as a sign of panic or shock. Fortunately though, he is back to his normal cheeky self!:)

I'm glad he is back to his usual self Emma its such a worry when that amount of blood comes from such a wee fella :( i was the same when Maurice caught his foot going back into the cage one night i phoned the vet and he said "well if you think its necessary to bring him in then bring him" i was like yeah as the towel we had him on had alot of blood on it - he ended up having to have his whole nail clipped right to the base and cauterised hence one of his nicknames ios now stumpy :))

Awww! So at least you understand where I'm coming from. And you never know...same as with us humans, the way a pig reacts to a bleed or infection or other problem is NOT set in stone.rolleyes

Thanks to everyone else for their supportive comments. :)

yes I'm definately an overprotective piggy mummy mallethead but id rather be safe than sorry you did the right thing Emma x

About 2 hours I took in a pig, a sow aged 5 years. The owner was most apologetic, she had given the pig a bath earlier today and had decided to trim the hair around the pig's face. Unfortunately the pig moved, the ear flap was cut through and there is only about a 4mm length of skin attaching the loose part of the ear to the rest of the flap.
The loose part needs to be removed before it gets torn off by the pig.
I wonder how much blood the pig lost, there is an excellent blood supply to the ears?
All I can say is that guinea pigs are thick-skinned!!

Note from admin

Please do not contribute to this thread if you cannot offer any useful advice. Emma posted on here because she was very concerned about her guinea pig. Sarcastic comments are of absolutely no use whatsoever and threrefore are not appreciated and will not be tolerated.

I would like to thank everyone who has contributed in a postive an d helpful manner.

What a sensible post, I hope others agree.
We are, after all is said and done, on the same side.

I like the use of red ink, on a thread discussing blood!!

This has absolutely nothing to do with Ben's situation! Seriously! In the same way that if I have a hypo, I'll react to it differently than another diabetic! Medical functions are not set in stone, are a very individual thing and vary from human to human, animal to animal! And it is natural to worry about a loved pet, so reassurance as well as helpful, useful advice was sought. I give up trying to get my point across and will now just focus on Benjamin.

Thank you FF. :)

To change the subject, is there a decent reference on Google as to your occupation?

oh for goodness sake shut up alcesterpig- the mod said sarcasm is not necessary so shut up!

them I'm glad that ben is better now :) I am also extra protective- my vet is on stand by at all times for the slightest concern and also my other guinea pig friends.

exactly- i get told off for giving 'bad' advice and someone says to leave a pig to bleed!

Well if my advice is bad (that a vet gives me!) then i dread to think what that advice is classed as.

Is there a website, that you recommend, about your line of work?

Seriously, this has NOTHING to do with Ben or his mouth problem that he had. All I am interested in is posting for the good of my pigs and so that there will be reference for any other people who may find themselves in the same situation. I do NOT see how questioning me about what I have written on my profile (it says Jack of all trades, master of none... for anyone who is remotely interested) is in any way helpful to either me or other forum users. I have reported you to the Mods and I hope that they see sense and see what you are trying to do and take some action over it.

In the Third World children are dying at the rate of 3 every minute from disease and malnutrition, that is something to be concerned about, not "reporting me to the mods", Big deal.
Why put information on your profile if you are not willing to be questioned about it?

Sorry to butt in but can we all just take a breath here please...rolleyes

Again, what you put is completely irrelevant. You are beginning to sound like a petulant child.

'Jack of all trades, master of none'. It is a bit of humour. It's not reeeeeeally what I do. I don't like to broadcast the ins and outs of my life on the forum. I'm quite secretive really. A bit like you. And more to the point, why should you question my occupation in the first place?

This is irrelevant to the Health & Illness section as well as the thread topic. If you wanted to chat about this kind of thing, surely it should be in a different section of the board.

Also the rules of the forum state..
"Please treat all members with respect and politeness. If you have different views to another member of the forum, please remain civil and not be abusive in any way. "

Which I don't feel you are abiding by.

Hi Aditya,

I would take him to the vet ASAP, you need to get his teeth checked in case any are broke. Hope your piggie will be ok.
