Hi we’re looking to adopt a male for our guinea pig who lost his cage mate. If he’s 4 1/2 what age would be recommended to try and bond him with? We’ve been told different things...a baby would be to much for him, babies are easier to bond, go 18 months + . I know it pretty much comes down to both personalities but I just wanted to check to see if age is important too?

Thanks :)

I don't think there is a specific age, if you get a baby you would eliminate most fuss over dominance, as your (current) piggy will be dominant...

:agr:
personality is the key factor, age is less important but as Sophie has said, a baby can often make bonding a bit easier as adults don’t see babies as a threat.

Oh I totally forgot about personality, do excuse me!:mal::doh:

Personality and compatibility are the key. If you can get to a reputable rescue then it’s best to let them try boar dating to find the best match. A baby boar can also be a good choice if you can’t find a rescue to do the dating for you. However be warned that as the baby grows and hits his hormonal teens there may still be some rocky waters ahead as your older boar may not like him throwing his weight around.

Please read the following guides very carefully before attempting any introduction yourself at home.

Thanks :) we were told that but also told a baby would be to much for him hence asking. We have a rescue in mind that has 4 or 5 males from 11 months upwards so have given our details to try boar dating with and hopefully find a match with one of them:)

Thanks. Will definitely be using those links for the bonding stages.

My preference would always be boar dating in a rescue if possible. It takes away some of the “lottery” involved in finding a piggy elsewhere.

If he's not fit for the antics of a baby, then a boar which is past it's teenage months (i.e. over 18months) is a better bet). Sometimes a younger piggy can give the older one a new lease of life.... see the video at the start of this post from a while back. I hope the person doesn't mind me linking it. I Think Maple Is Enjoying Her New Home...

My 6 year old boy lost his brother earlier this year and when I introduced him to a 6 week old baby boy they got on really well right from the beginning - they've been together for 8 months now and I'm sure having a lively new young friend has been good for him, It's certainly encouraged him to eat veggies he would never have tried before

Thanks :).

I would say he was healthy and just as active, maybe a little less vocal (waking me up for veggies) than when his cage mate was here. Like I said I think we will give this rescue a try as they have a few looking for homes and if they aren’t a match we will look into younger ones
