My guinea pig has dental problems and has to have regular teeth files as he is missing 2 of his back teeth and the vet said his teeth in general arn't in great shape :( he often doesn't eat any of his dry food at all and I have to syringe feed him, when ever I syringe feed him it's always af if he is really hungry he has already finished the first syringe and is waiting for more before I have the next one ready! He willingly takes the mushed up nuggest from the syringe, but I would prefer it if he ate his dry food by himself as I am not around during the day and I can't syringe him through the night. He is currently on the burgess excel nuggets but is there and other dry food that he might be more encouraged/easier for him to eat?
Help much appreciated :) :)

Is he eating hay? What about vegetables?

You could try him with the burgess blackcurrant and oregano nuggets - they're much smaller and he may find them easier.

He is eating his hay and veggies fine and I'll give the blackcurrant ones a go and see if he will eat them

Hay is the best thing for his teeth. Burgess excel nuggets break up really easily so will be really easy to eat. Syringe feeding is ok, but wont be helping his teeth to ware down. What is the exact problem with his teeth?
Pigs dont need to eat all there dry food. 80% of there diet should be hay.

1 or 2 of his back teeth are missing so the top ones/one overgrow :( and he has to have them filed under anaesthetic every 5 or so months :( he has lost quite abit of weight so just want to build him back up really

Debbie runs a hospital for dental piggies in conjunction with a very good piggy vet who does dental treatment without GA in Northampton. Debbie is doing the equally important nursing and feeding side of any treatment, so she has lots of experience and can give you tips.
