Betty and Gypsy, foster piggies

Morning!

Well last night I visited Fi in Bristol - a lovely lady who is currently undergoing a rather large rescue and needed foster carers for some guineas so she could go get some more from an unfortunate situation.

So we brought home a pair of pretty guinea ladies called Gypsy and Betty.

Having never come into contact with a rescue guinea before I had no idea how totally wild and scared they are. I thought mine weren't tame when they arrived here but actually they were fairly relaxed, these two are scared still and when you pick them up fight like you are about to kill them. Poor things!

They are safely in their hutch in the garden, the run has been blocked off for a while and overnight I am pleased to say they have been out and eaten their veggies.

It looks like a hot ones today so going to try and convince them to have a go in the run, but only if they want to come down the ramp (one of them ran down it last night before it was blocked off).

Anyway when I can I will post photos, i am so pleased to have them and hope they settle in and allow a bit more relaxed handling in a few weeks.

Congratulations on becoming a foster mummy! I am sure Fi is thrilled to know these girls are being looked after so well, it sounds like all is going very smoothly so far. Good for you!

Yes planning on taking it very slow indeed.

I have opened up this morning to put some veggies very close to their bedroom and some grass and fresh hay in by their bedroom.

That's the extent of any contact today. They are climbing on top of each other in fear with just that so I can take a hint and let them calm before attempting any more for now.

It's just so funny seeing the difference in their behaviour compared to my indoor girls who just seem so laid back now!

Well done for taking on rescue piggies. It is sad to see them so scared. Many of the piggies that come into rescue have not been handled, but with patience, it is a real joy seeing them come round to you, then they make great pets and friends for you. xxxxx

sometimes it takes time to gain thier trust,especially if we dont know previous situations, ah bless them hope they settle soon and that you get lots of joy from being a foster mummy ! x x x

I think I will, I hope I will.

They haven't been out really today but they have eaten some grass, hey and their veggies and those excel sticks you can get (you know the one's that look like cigars and have nettle or dandelion in?)

I'm going to leave it about a week until I try and pick them up - let them get their bearings.

Well done for fostering Betty and Gypsy. If I had gone later, or you had gone earlier to Fi's, we would have met yesterday.

Enjoy your girlies - watch you don't fall in love with them though, it is very easy to do that. :laluot_29: I have been there and bought the t-shirt!

The neutered boar who I adopted from Fi yesterday has settled in well. Did Betty and Gypsy come from the Chippenham rescue like he did?

Sorry for calling him a "he" ... his name is still under discussion but I think we now have all agreed on one. To be revealed!

Yes they did come from there. Wish I had the chance to meet you too - all you guinea people are sweet!

I have wondered about the falling in love with them, esp if they start to trust us - how does it go then? If they begin to trust one family of humans will they trust all humans?

Well, I fostered Umbrella from Summerleaze ... in no time at all we were smitten by him. He was a poorly soul, just so neglected.

Within a couple of weeks, I asked Louise (Summerleaze) if we could adopt him as he had become part of the family.

if i was allowed i would keep my fosters too lol...

my foster girls are going to their new home this week or next, but the boys arent ready as they keep having fall outs so i wouldnt want to let them go yet..

ive fell in love with the girls, would keep them if i could, but a friend is adopting them, so he said he will keep me updated on their progress..

Fostering is both rewarding and upsetting..well, for me it is..I'm so soft x
