A couple of days ago I noticed a bald patch on Nimbus just under his chin, slightly to the side.

I suspected mites or a fungal infection and arranged with my sister for her to bring her guinea first aid kit for me as hers has more in it than mine.

She came the day after and when I got Nimbus out to show her the bald patch I was shocked to see it had developed into a lump over night and had a small hole in it that had pus coming out of it. After a quick bit of research we decided that the best thing to do was get as much pus out as possible and flush the hole with a saline solution as it was too late to take him to the vets.

We did this and the hole looked much cleaner and the lump went sort of saggy like an empty balloon.

Today I checked on the lump again and the lump itself is no different but the hole looks slightly larger and almost looks like an ulcer. Ive continued bathing it with salt water and it doesn't seem to bother him in anyway at all. Hes still eating and drinking as normal and doesn't seem to be in pain when I'm touching it or cleaning it?

Any ideas what it could be before I take him to the vet and do you think the bathing in saline solution will be doing anything to help?

Just want my boy to be better :(

Sorry to hear poor Nimbus is in the wars. Sounds like an abscess to me. Does he live with another pig and if so could it be from a bite? If it is you will find an upper and lower puncture wound. If it is an abscess then flushing out with saline or cooled boiled water with salt will be the best you can do for your little man until you can get him to a vet, but he does need to be seen quite soon. Healing vibes to Nimbus x

Sorry to hear this, definitely a vets visit needed as VickiA has said above to get him looked at as it does sound like an abscess and Antibiotics will probably be needed. Hope Nimbus gets well soon

I agree, sounds like an abcess and so needs a vet visit for antibiotics.

Been to the vets with Nimbus this morning and was given a course of antibiotics for him to take. The vet didn't lance the lump or even take a swab of it to check what it was but thought it was an abcess as you have all said.

He said I was doing the right thing with the salt water bathing and suggested I also use tcp on the 'hole' to avoid infection. Does this sound ok to you?

If I don't see an improvement in him after taking the antibiotics for a couple of days he will be going straight back to the vets!

I have dealt with absess in that area before and it was result of a bite.

With regards to tcp if vet suggested it I'm sure its fine. I lnow some people have used hiboscrub. I personally have only used salt water. In addition please keep an eye on any scabs forming and keep picking them off (once softened with water) so that it heals before closing up that way you can keep ontop of the forming pus and remove it. I personally would bathe twice daily at least
