My little girl has always had a abnormally large belly, and it seems to cause her discomfort when i touch her belly. She is quite a nervous guinea pig. Any suggestions about what could be wrong?

Welcome for the forum. :)
How old is she, and how long have you had her?
Also, roughly how large do you think it is?

Thank you :)
Shes approx 1yr 2 mnths old. I'm not sure how large she is. It just seems to sit at the sides and not underneath.

It hasn't come on suddenly, has it? Her belly is not hard in places and has a hollow sound when you knock - Just checking for signs of bloat because in that case she needs to be seen ASAP.

If it has come on slowly, it is perfectly normal. I have some girls who got these hard balls at a similar age. Some girls can get big bums while others stay pretty trim. They are not fat - you judge a girl how she is around her chest for that.

Also, if its quite hard, it maybe a tumour/growth. If its something that seems to be growing, it maybe worth a trip to the vet.

Some girls just seem to have big bellies. My Linney is very pear-shaped, all her weight is in her sides and rear end. The vet has palpated her abdomen and checked for ovarian cysts and any masses and her internal organs feel normal, she just seems to carry her weight in this area. It could just be her usual shape, but a vet can palpate the abdomen to feel the approximate size and shape of the internal organs, which might put your mind at ease.

Hi there and welcome to the forum.

If you could give some more info on your piggy hopefully we can help. Is she a lone pig, how long have you had her, what's her health history.

There could be a number of reasons why her belly is enlarged, the most obvious would be pregnancy. Bloat, ovarian cysts, abdominal mass, the list goes on. The only person that could tell you what is going on is a vet and as you are concerned enough to find and join this forum to ask I would suggest that you arrange a vet visit so that you can find the answer and set your mind at rest.
