I have a lovely enclosed balcony that Billie used to love running around on in the nice weather.

Within the last 6 months I have been feeding the local birds on the patio table and I get robins, blackbirds, sparrows and wood pigeons

Ive read that guineas are afraid of birds so I'm in 2 minds whether to introduce Merlin to the balcony when the weather gets better. Does it depend on the guinea or would be unfair to put him out there knowing that the birds land on the table quite a lot?

Mine dash around and hide when they see a woodpigeon fly over the top of the outside enclosure. Smaller birds they don't both with too much, and I've seen blackbirds, robins and other hopping near them with no reaction. I think the guineapigs are aware of large flying predators and thinkn they are about to be carried off by the wood pigeons.

I'd be a bit wary as where there are pigeons there are often kestrels and sparrowhawks etc and these would definitely (I would think) frighten guinea pigs as they are birds of prey. If the pen or enclosure is covered and there is no risk of the piggies being swooped on then I might think again!

The balcony is not covered unfortunately but has high walls.
Not sure on birds of prey as we live in Central London

i dont know whether its just my pigs but they bite my dogs nose, so i know they would be ok, maybe you could try it and if he dont like it dont put him out again :)

Central London have a small population of kestrels and other birds of prey! Do bird droppings have some diseases that can effect guinea pigs! 98)

Mabey you could make some kind of 'lid' with a wooden frame, then mesh the fits over the sides of the balcony while he is out, and then make it foldable so it can be taken down and stored easily ie- down the side of a wardrobe.

Mine aren't afraid of the birds and we get alot of small ones robins etc, they where quite scared of magpies we had last year except Jessie she just runs at them and they fly off ;D

The balcony is too big to cover sadly

The only biggish bird we get is the woodpigeon. I might try him out there to see how he gets on

We're sending Merlin some brave vibes for his first time out on the balcony :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:
GOOD LUCK MERLIN :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* just go BRRRRRRRRRRRRRR at the birdies O0
