Bit of a weird one…
I’ll start with a bit of backstory before I get to the point.
Around a month ago I took in a female rabbit, being given away on a local Facebook group. Fast forward a couple of weeks into having her and she gave birth (very unexpected!) In the hay bale on top of her hutch! Not the best place to have babies but they were deep in the bale and I was sure they wouldn’t fall off so left them to it.
Now they are starting to move around and open their eyes obviously they needed moving out of the hay bale on top of the hutch so they don’t crawl out and fall.
The only available space I have at the moment is the top tier of the Guinea pig hutch in the Guinea pig enclosure. So I moved the nest into the bedding area of the hutch and put the ramp door-thing down so the guineas couldn’t get in.
Stepped out to go and get mama rabbit and a heard a baby rabbit screaming, turned around to see one of the Guinea pigs had barged through the ramp-door and was dragging a baby out of the nest!
Got the guinea out then checked baby bun and not a mark on it.
It happened so quickly but I can’t stop wondering what on earth the Guinea pig was doing!? It’s all secure now so no way it can happen again. Just so confused as to what she was doing trying to steal a baby rabbit
, I could understand if she attacked it but she was just so calm walking off with it in her mouth
.
Just to add, hutch is (very!) secured now, there’s no way the guineas can get to the rabbits and vice versa. This was a very temporary, emergency measure whilst I get something else setup for mum and surprise baby buns. x
