:) Hi, I am new to this forum and I have a pig who started off with bloat, moved on to impaction, and now seems to be losing the use of his back legs. I am at a loss as to what to do for the best.
He's a boar, (obviously!), and is about 4 years old. He has been back and forth to the vets on and off since May and has probiotics regularly. The vet said it's not the worst case he's seen and some days are better than others.
I've learnt how to empty his bottom and have to do it every day for him. But when we let him out for floor time, he just sits still and won't be enticed into walking very much. When he's in the cage, sometimes his back legs just seem to stick out at funny angles because he's shuffling around on his bottom. He's eating, but isn't having many fresh veggies at the moment, because it was grass that set off the bloat. He has dry food & hay available all the time and today I have started him on organic veggie baby food, because I'm sure he is losing weight. What I'm not sure about is how much baby food to give him at a time? I am syringe feeding it to him, although he seemed to like the sweet potato & veg one I've just given him! How many 2ml syringe-fulls should he have? I also read that somebody gives their pigs baby porridge when they're sick - is that ok to do? I really don't want to lose him - he's such a cutie and has been so good throughout this whole thing. :smitten:
Any advice would be good....

Charlie, at the top of this board there's some info about CCT - Cambridgeshire Cavy Trust - with Vedra's phone number - if you can text here she will call you back, she is a rodentologist.

yeah, i'm afraid i'm not great on things like this either, getting in touch with Vedra would be good, she'll give you some good advice, i'm sure. sorry to hear he's under the weather. best wishes for a full and swift recovery. sorry i'm not much help. ((big hugs and love)))

You say he lies with his legs at an angle-this could indicate arthritis..It would be worth asking the vet for an anti inflammatory inj.,also Metacam would help.Potters Tabritus tablets are also helpful and these can be given long term.

You are probably already using vetbed to keephim warm and dry. Massaging the limbs will help and you could also try Peters swimming therapy.

;D Oh, he'll just love swimming - NOT! Will have a read in a few minutes, I'll try anything now! Got to finish this mountain of ironing before I get too engrossed here..........

Thanks everyone, any ideas on the amount to syringe feed at one go, please? :-\
